The reason you can't hear the knocking so much from cold start is because the oil is still cold and relatively thick and sticky.

referring back to a comment earlier, you said you put the original cam back in after finding the sw5 cam to be 'rather worn'.... did you replace the cam followers at the same time ?

Yeah I did
when I rebuilt the engine i replaced
Cam (original)
Cam Followers
Thrust Washers
Big end shells
Crank Bearings
All Bottom and top seals and gaskets
Piston Rings 1275 +20
Tightened up all bolts to the correct tourqage according to manual.
Set rocker gap

I've seen cranks hitting on on the cam lobes, if the cam timing is out you'll bend valves and get knocks

Yeah turned it over a few times to make sure all was ok before refitting as I did not want any issues when it was in.... lol
Cant adjust the cam timing as its an MPi
I am looking to get hold of another Crankshaft just now. Scanning forums and Flee bay for an a+ crankshaft
