A good rule of thumb seems to be for the more common engines:

850 - 74mph
998 - 80mph
1275 - 90mph

Should probably point out these are top speeds.

It's very loud, but I regularly sit down the motorway at 85 in my 998, and that's the config'd sat nav speedo reading, so not far off. All standard except big bore exhaust (standard manifolds) and K&N filter in standard housing. Not bad to be honest >_<

Ah yes. The illusive white whale of the forum. A 100mph standard Clubman... A speedo is not accurate at all if you change the wheels, engine and speedo itself. This coupled with the fact its a apparently standard 998 means the car will simply not do 100mph. There is not enough aerodynamic efficiency or outright power.

got a k and n air filter in standard box and stage one kit, still on 10, and its not the 1100 engine, its a 998 from my brothers car,

to do a 100 you'll need approx 80bhp, yeah cameras are set at 10% extra I've heard, not sure about the bit extra but you're probably right as I've been doing about 46/7 on a 40 and seen a mobile one hid behind something and nothing came through but I did have to drop the anchors

i think you might be reading to much into a throw away comment implying more about your boyfriend than yourself, but hey ho if you're gonna take offense to that fair enough - a 998 doing 100mph must be some machine

My boyfriends 998cc top speed is 100mph!

did he tell you a centimeter is the same as an inch too >_<

sorry couldn't resist...

He is only the comment above you, you know,
i'm not dumb, i do know how a speedo works.

hey, my speedo is correct as i went past a sign that tells you your speed also done this of my mate punto, and a bmw m3 going up hill not long ago,

ashley

Ashley. Your speedo may well be accurate at 30 or 40 mph but as your speed increases so does any inacuracy in the speedo. So at 40 it might be correct but at 85 it may well read 100mph. Anyway I remember both you and your girlfriend having a bit of an argument with everyone over this a short time ago in another thread. You didnt listen then so I dont know why I would thinlk you will listen now. Happy speeding dude!! 100mph is Impossible in a standard 998 regardless of what your speedo says.

Think if a std 998 can go 100, then mine will read 120 next time I go on the motorway

Now where did I put those spare speedo drive worm and pinions....... :P >_<

I thought I had accidentally got my 1275 Mpi up to 110mph a few years ago on the M40.
Now I have sat nav I have found out that my speedo is waaaaaaaaaaay out, 'speshly at higher speeds. >_< So it was plobly more like 95mph.
Sits happily at 70 and will overtake at 85+ when she's called on.

How much do people depend on what the sat nav says.I ask as since i got my tomtom 2 years ago in all the cars i have used it in it has never read the same as the speedo.I used guessworks calculator to install my fd and worm/pinion gears and had it calibrated on a rr,i reguarly drive through a fixed speed sign which flashes your speed which also matches my speedo. However whenever i put my satnav in it reads between 2-8mph out at a constant 70 depending on how many satelites its recieving,i once had a new passat diesel and to get the satnav to read 100 i had to do 112 on the speedo. My point is this yes some speedos are inaccurate but a satnav is always calculating your position on the road and what satelites its recieving from therefore i would not trust the speed as its only a guide, also when your satnav sends you in a river do follow it as it cannot be wrong.

I rely on my Sat nav when I use it as it is a damn sight more accurate than my speedo. I never top 75mph according to mine (Metro engines and 110mph Nikko clocks dont mix apparently) When I have my engine out I am definitely getting the worm and pinion changed!

When we were trying to get across France as quickly as possible, we found out that with the speedo needle pointing between 80-85mph, everything magically smoothed out and all the various rattles went quiet. >_< So that's what speed we cruised at, for hundreds of miles. Don't know how accurate that was, haven't calibrated it with a GPS, will have to try. Wasn't a lot more speed to come though.

Not again....!!

Apologies to the op but theres too much willy waving going on here for my liking. Also the laws of physics appear to have been once again broken by 998 capable of 100MPH!!
