I've just got the standard light situation at the moment, but i would like to get rid of the black light holder, weld up the holes, and have the number plate lights to be small black or chrome studs, which light up 90 degrees to the bodywork (lighting up the plate), has anyone seen or heard of any such lights?

While we're at it, does anyone know where i can buy number plate stickers? like, vinyl stickers, that are all law abiding etc. Thanks in advance, Alex.

There are no stick on plates that are legal for post '73 cars. They may now be legal as black and white plates for earlier cars but in the past only certain specific models were permitted a body mounted number.

The lamps you are after are instrument post lamps or bolt lights. Post lamps are used on aircraft instruments, bolt lights are the same thing but renamed because car modifiers think they invented them.

I got mine lights from a company called Larkspeed in Leeds (via internet). There will be may others I'm sure.

Seem to illuminate the plate okay and I had no issue at MOT time.

Good luck

The MOT doesn't check if the lamps are legal, only that they work. Otherwise your foglamp (assuming that's what is fitted into the boot lid) would have failed immediately!

Take your point Dan but as for the fog lamp, it is a Hella unit, stated as a fog light a E marked accordingly. I would be interested to know why you consider it not to be legal.

Steve

Required lamps may not be mounted onto a moving panel such as a bootlid.

<<>>

Actually scratch that, I just checked and it applies to all the other lamps on the rear of the car but not to fog lamps as far as I can see. I apologise.

Not a problem. Just checked on my Passat and the fog lamp on that is on the boot lid.

Those lamps that steved posted have very fiddly wires, a number of people i know, including me couldnt get anything to hold onto them, solder, chocolate blocks etc.

Hi mini_mad69

It's a while back now but I don't remember the wires being too thin. I put the ground under the nut of the light pin with a 6mm crimp terminal and used a spade connector to link onto the original number plate lamp wire.

Hope this helps

Steve
