Morning Peeps,

I know the subject of premiums for younger drivers ('speshly those with the dangly bits, rather than those without) comes up quite regularly on this forum, and I know how much I hate the way insurance companies make money, so I was intrigued to read an advert in the Sunday papers yesterday.

Have a look at the link below.

The Co-op will discount your insurance based on your standard of driving

Basically, they'll fit you with an in-car black box, send you email updates about your driving & how you can improve it, and reduce the cost of your premiums based on your driving performance. ;)

Interesting, eh?

Good idea in theory but I don't think many young lads will go for it. Lets face it, the majority of young male drivers like to put their foot down a bit.

Its limited to what cars it can be fitted to.

We had a leaflet come through the post about it, so I had a look into it.

I'd bet that they won't fit it to a Mini.

And, its backed by Brake, so anybody who likes driving can't support it! ;)

they also put other boundaries on what you can and cant do, such as drive at certain times through the night.

also things like how quickly you corner. (how pants is that if you have a mini)

Yep. The idea is that it trains you to drive safely and therefore you pay less in insurance.

Of course there will be restrictions on how & when you drive, otherwise there'd be no point.....

what if its night and you need to get to A.E but its not seriouse enougth for an ambulance.

what if you it gose dark when you out some where because you had to stay late to finish some thing. Dose that mean you would then have to sleep where ever you are.

Its a good idea but I certanly couldent do it its abit like being on a lead. Plus my job revolves around driveing.

It anioys me that im paying so much but ive not crashed, dissopointing realy.

its absolute tripe in my eyes!
lets face it, all it is is another way for the insurance to get out of paying in the event of an accident.

sorry MR Smith we wont be paying out as you were doing 32 in a 30mph zone.

Dose that count the fact that modern cars speedos over read by 10% they legaly have too now.

So if Mr. Smith was driving at 32 his speedo would have said 42.

Assuming it was only a 100mph speedo.

All of our work vehicles have data recorders, and people tend to drive more carefully as big brother is watching you!

Thats wrong.

If its over reading by 10% that means 10% of the read speed.

So if you are doing 32mph the speedo will read 35.2mph

I'm not sure I'd want someone knowing where I was all the time.

I'm just past the outrageous insurance prices now anyway. The trick to cheap insurance is to shop around, get on the phone and talk to people, and then be as cheeky as possible and bargain with them to get the best quote, I recently told my mate this, and they knocked around 600 quid off a stupid price. I knocked 1/3 off mine by being annoying.
