i work gigs that dont finish until 11pm (thats the time by law they need to be off stage without either a specially granted lisence or fines of £1000 a minute).

how would i get home from work?
drive there and run back?

if i had to pay £100 a time there'd be no point driving or working.

Appreciate what you're saying but whilst it wouldn't work for you, it gives him the option the option to still drive his car.

thats true, but its not going to be anygood long term if he doesnt experience night time driving.
my mates mom has been driving years but doesnt drive at night unless she REALLY has too, its both rediculous and pathetic.

the best thing to do is limit the size engine you can have, even if you jad to rent the car from the insurance company, they could even MOT it, to check you havent messed with it. :D

im definatley not going for this, my premium would just go up alot cus i like fast starts and taking corners reasonably quickly, obviously never breaking the restricted speed limit :) im driving a 998 yaris at the moment and it pulls like a train at 3000revs and over, so i like that rev band but i still get 50mpg odd :D but the insurance companys wouldnt like this so a black box would be bad :(

My pals 17 year old lad has just had one of these fitted to his car.

The difference with having this little black box was worth over £2000 on his premium !! (& he still paid £1800 on an X reg Suzuki Alto given to him by his Gran)

If he uses the car between 11pm & 5am he gets charged £100 every time

He's also limited to 5000 miles a year

He has a web log in so he can see what he has been upto & how he is driving.

Big brother / restrictive or not, it was the only way he could afford the insurance

Not meaning to sound rude or anything, but that insurance price is a rip off for a car like that.

I think i'd be a worse driver with a black box if im honest.

If i was constantly worrying about how much i was braking, my cornering speed, take off speed, the speed in a speed limit etc then i'd be so tense behind the wheel i'd make all sorts of ridiculous mistakes.

Being calm behind the wheel without being restricted would make me a much smoother driver and thus, most probably safer.

Being observed when i drive is bad enough. Im stupendously terrible at roundabouts because while worrying about what the instructor is telling me im already onto the roundabout not completely knowing what im doing.

I think normal insurance will do me better.

my instructor used to go made if i crawled around corners making the cars behind me slow right down.
he used to say, "whack it" in his crazy italian accent.

I agree, but that was the best option after a month of searching & exploring every option & insurance company that was willing to quote. I suspect the actual car had very little impact on the overall premium.

I used to have one of those PAYG insurance boxes in my corolla a few years back, the insurance cost me £30 a month with a 'free' mileage of 100, then it was 10p a mile after. Between 11pm -6am it cost £1 a mile. Was a good investment for a student or someone who uses their car seldomly but I had to stop it as I would regularly travel 2000 miles a month between 11pm-6am (couldnt face paying £27,600 a year for a 1.6 grandads car :) )

Suppose its just me then, the highest quote I ever got (with only 6 months since passing my test) was £1100 for a BMW 318IS Mtech fully comp, but I guess things are probably different over there.

The Government, along with the insurance companies, would happily colude in Big Brother tactics such as Fines by post via the GPS system, road pricing based on road use via the GPS, (something which is necessary when in 15 years time 80% of new cars are all electric, and they can't get money from vehicle excise or fuel duty), and insurance via GPS.

The Car companies have told them it will KILL the new car market, and that they can stick it.

The insurance companies have colluded to make insuring any car for young drivers almost impossible, and if you accept this sort of thing to reduce premiums at 17, you'll happily go on accepting it forever.

WE should on principle resist. This is one step towards big brother.

Oh very much so, we have to go to great lengths to get quotes like that.

The cheapest quote i got on a comparison site was £2500 for a 1000cc mini. Classic car insurance is the only way to go for us at the moment.

mate of mine has one of these 'black boxes' on his clio, his insurance is still over £1300 while my the quote ive had with adrian flux (or footman james i cant remember) was less than £1000 with proformance mods, and a £100 hike because my new postcode starts with 'ST'. i seriously doubt this would be cheaper on a mini.
