I take it you don't get a reading at all if you earth it to where the bulb would normally earth then?

yes i earthed it to the point on the car where i have been tring to earth it to. i think i might just admit defeat on this one and pay out 4 an auto electrician to sort it out as i am completely lost!!!

it sounds like you just have a bad contact, or a contact through paint. Have you tried some sort of lock washer under one of the fixings to grip through the paint and directly onto the metal?
Also, which of these light housing types do you have? the plastic MK2 version, or the later version which has a little "tab" for a spade connector? (IIRC, the tab is towards the bottom end of the back surface)
Oh, and a stupid question (but you have to ask!), you have tried a few different bulbs to make sure you've not blown 6 of them!?

this is simple , really
just make sure you have either 12 volts or a bright test light @ the center contact on the bulb holder & then make sure the earth is good & not restricted...
best way to do this would make a fresh earth cable between - on the battery & your lamps , make a good job of routing the wire to prevent it being caught & pulled off though
most problems occur at the point of the wire being crimped to the bulb holder & is often over looked...
good luck

OK, so I was talking about the Lucar tag because I thought you had Mk4 lamps. Since you have Mk2 lamps, you should as said above just bolt the lamps to the body and that's it. Has the car been re-painted? Is there too much paint around the lamp mounting points to get an earth? Are the lamp housings properly clean?

you might need to scrape some paint off so that you get a good earth.
Do as above using the new wires and earth direct to the battery. Then if it still oesn't work then you may have other problems.

hello folks after a lot of head scratching and rude words i finally got the lights to work.
This will make you all laugh im sure!!
Well with the lights u hav the cable that comes in which fixes to that round thingy well i put the spring the wrong side of the round thingy so it was pushing bulb away from contact!!!!!!!!!!!
I think its time to find a new day job and not be an electrician anymore!!!
Cheers for all your help and sorry for being thick!
