Hi there where the two nuts a visable inside of the car which are used to mount the accelerator pedal in the foot well. when i push the accel it is fine but when i have got down and looked properly the metal it fixes onto seems detatched where the right hand nut is and moves easily.

Is this an easy repair?

This is the lower section of the forward bulkhead and should look like this

The bulkhead may have come away from the fwd heelboard most likely caused by rust. Yes it is an easy repair but if you have got the engine and subframe in then it will make life difficult but still doable.

the car is on the road so i am guessing it is going to be the difficult option. will i have to cut out and shape a patch to put in?

The best thing you could do is post a photo to give us a good idea of what the damage is. I will be able to give you a better idea then.

It mainly flexs on the right nut but behind this seems quite solid

That is not good, take the pedal off first then you can see how bad the rust is. It looks like there is rust starting down the side where it meet's the inner wing as well.

Before you take the pedal off draw a line down from each stud and above as well and then a line horizontally through the studs each side in the event you shear off the the studs. At least then you have a reference point for installing new studs on the repair piece.

You will have to make one for there as i believe you can buy a complete lower bulkhead panel but that's an engine and subframe out job. Once everything is off you will be able to see how big a repair section you will need to make.

Im working on a MK1 at the moment and it has gone in the same place, theres just a rectangler hole where the bracket would sit  You would have to put a panel/plate in with captive nuts as i believe ths subframe tower would be in the way to fit the pedal/bracket with just bolts and nuts

i was thinking about getting a substantial piece of metal and making a mounting plate for the foot pedal but will i have to cut all the old bodywork out first or can i treat the metal and weld the plate ontop?

i have noticed there is a big extraction pipe 5" maybe going from the drivers inner wing from the engine bay to the drivers footwell, is this normal and will this be the culprit for the rust?

Thanks for the help guys

Yes it is normal and its not an extraction pipe its a fresh air feed pipe to your heater No this will not be the cause of the rust. It could be anything really from a scratch in the paint work that has let rust start to a defect in the metal itself.

There looks like there is more rust along the seam between the front heelboard and inner wing. Now this again could be water that has got under the seam and then started to corrode or its possible you have had a water leak in the car at some point.

It may pay you to have a look around the fresh air vent to see if the flitch area there has corroded a bit like this

I have had it to my local classic mini garage 'green & whites' He says he can see daylight where there shouldnt be. Goes in next wed and he his stripping it and welding it up for me

Didnt want to risk it due to all the fammable gasses and materials in the area. he said it will be a pain in the arse to do but will give it his best shot
