Batteries came for the welder so finished off the drivers side with the extra mountings for the harness crutch strap. The bare metal was starting to show signs of surface rust so gave it a coat of black. I will do the rest of the floor when ive welded in the other side mounts

Apologies if you've already mentioned this during the thread, but my son has now been bitten by the bug & is aiming to do a couple of road rallies next year. One of the things that I think may cause him a slight problem is the pretty pathetic wipers that our Min has. I do know that was a standard feature of most 70's cars (I had to put up with it when they were new!) but is there anything that can be done now to improve them? Are you doing anything on this build, or did you do anything on your previous car?

Continuing good work on the build, I think we may be investing in some of those seat bars & harness eye mounts too....

hi Keefr , i have always used the original later wipers with the "u" hook fitting and a good quality blade. The only mods i have done is to tweek the spring a bit tighter in the arm to allow it to have more pressure against the screen. Also on my current mini i have the hoses attached to the arms pic below

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'll have to check what ours is fitted with, & I bet giving the screen a really good clean will help too! I like the hose onto wiper arm trick, used to use it on my Escorts, but had forgotten all about it!

Thanks again

Keith

Just a thought, but if your mini is early 70's then you may benefit from fitting the later 2 Speed wipers from a later car and using good quality wiper blades such as Bosch..

I also used to use a product on the screen called "Rain off" or "Rain-X"

see review here http://www.autoexpre...rain-repellents

Hope this helps, John

Thanks John, it's a 79 but it's a bit of a bits & pieces car, so I don't know which wipers we have. Shall check tomorrow.
Cheers

Another Old dodge to clean an old screen is to TCut it the polish but the screen must be immaculately clean before you use TCut on it.

Whilst my addled brain is still working instead of spending loads of money on spotlight steady's cut a jubilee clip in half opposite the adjuster and drill a hole the size of a pop rivet in each end attach one end with a to the spotlight the other to the front panel and hay presto no fluttering lights :)

Another tip that will save you some problems is to us "c" clamps for the exhaust like these below

http://www.minispare...350/C-AHT97.jpg

In addition to this if you weld a 8mm nut on edge on the side of the exhaust both sides of the Join and lock-wire the Joint as well as the C clamps it should prevent it coming off on Whites( unclassified rough roads marked in white with a narrow black boarder on a road rally) or heavy landings..

Ahh the old tricks still stand the test of time the jubilee trick is what I use on my current rally mini.
I have seen the exhaust tip on a mk2 escort so I will be using that one on the exhaust when I get round to it
Thanks John

They do indeed - I used the exhaust tip on a Mk1, after copying it from a works car...!!

Spent some time getting all the sound deadening off the rear floors, christ theres some weight in that stuff
Posted Image

decided to make the rear parcel shelf a neater sealed version
Posted Image

im happier with that, got the boot sealed off now
Posted Image

I know it's a while ago, but us mini owners do tend to hoard mini stuff. You wouldn't happen to still have that parcel shelf section?

Has anyone else had to use reducers on the heater matrix pipes? All my planned pipework in the engine bay is 1/2" and the matrix is 5/8 so i decided to knock something up that would also look alot neater through the bulkhead.
A friend gave me a steel 5/8" pipe joiner which i cut in half, in my bits and pieces i found some 1/2" steel sleeves but i cant remember what they are for but they were an inch long
Posted Image
They were welded together and the welds smoothed down. Then i found an old heater valve fixing which i cut in half just to use the flange. This was drawn around so i could make a copy for the other one of the pair im making
Posted Image
Posted Image
The 2 bits were then welded together from both sides and the welds filed to be nice and neat

Posted Image
A coat of paint finished the job and another one made for the other side

My son is still toying with the idea of trying to do a road event or two, but when I sit in the car with him, as we're both on the hefty side, it's a bit comical trying to read maps when he's driving, so when we put the seats in properly he's thinking of putting the navs seat a bit further back than the drivers (although I've no intention of navigating for him so hopefully he'll find someone smaller!) - I take it that's not a problem you have with your nav?!

Those seat rails do look very neat indeed!
