Do you mean like this one....

[attachment=113568:IMG_0784.jpg]

Well this one was done on our CNC mill

It depends on how good a job you want ? some people have apparently used a dremmel, however accuracy will be sadly lacking

Thanks for the photo and info! How much roughly would this cost to do properly? If the engine was still in the car when taken to the machine shop.

It will cost a lot more than £60 if the engine is still in the car when you take it to the machine shop.... and that is assuming that they will even bother to do the job, taking engines out is not normally associtaed with machine shops.....

Right, ok thanks for the information on this. Its a fairly large undertaking by the sounds of it then!!!

From the photo posted earlier i can see the cutouts in the block but how big do they actually need to be?

What is pocketing? In lehmans terms!!

hi
just means making space in the block for the valves to go up and down, as the 998 and1275 head have different spacing(lehmans terms)
Imo not worth the trouble, fit a complete 1275 and go
John

see that comment annoys me abit

1275 are expensive and may go quite quick but its still not like a 998

i would rather drive a 998 or 850 over a 1275 any day of the week

but thats My Opion

998's are ok but there is nothing like th ereal thing

The other point on a 998 with a 12G940 head fitted is that the insurancwon't change much..... as it is still a 998

about 998 reliability over a 1275, i was told that as the bores are smaller this means there space between them is much thicker and leads to less engine failure through metal fatigue, and that they can take much more of a pounding than a 1275 can without it going pop, and also less likey to blow a headgasket? someone clevere than me will prove if this is bullpoop tho?

No Paul that one has never been an auto.... it is 6 speed though

Do you still believe in fairy tales ? if you made a 998 and got it up to 150bhp...... like some of the 1275/1380 etc.. then you would also experience a similar amount of potential reliability issues...

Well good luck with the not great information here and mixed opinions. If you want speed fit a massive body kit and huge spoiler with 17" rims.

Sorry have I gone off topic?

Witch is kind of the reason why I also stuck with a 998, but pocketed and fitted with an mg metro cam and 12g940 head.

The basic engine itself was practically free, the head and cam were £60 tops, add in the gearbox refurb, new bearings, piston rings, gaskets etc, etc. I ended up with basically a rebuilt 998 for the same amount, as a shagged 1275 would sell for. As in my mind having stripped down a few supposedly good running engines (mostly for parts) there no such thing a decent used engine that’s ready to drop straight in.

general ignorance is a thing on QI where they ask a question that everyone thinks is common knowledge and the answer is always not what they think it is :)
