what oil is best for the auto 1000cc ?
i need to do a change asap (just bought the car) & would like to put decent
oil in her...
it still suprises me today how clever a unit the auto box & engine is as it runs on the same oil
lastly i have a oil filter , but i thought auto's had a element filter but my supplier has assured me a spin-on canister filter is right ?
it's a 1991 mayfair auto by the way....
any help would be greatly appreciated

just good old 10/40 will do, change it every 3k to keep hte gearbox happy.
Do not use anything but a pure mineral oil, none of this synthetic/part synthetic.
*edit* as for the filter I think you are right, it's a element filter similar to the ones used on early minis..
If you look under the bonnet it's the horizontal tube at the front above the gearbox.

The auto box uses an element filter inside a horizontally mounted metal cansiter. It's a messy job to change. The spin on filter won't fit.
Best oil is good old 20W50.

20/50 is too think for the uk climate (especially at this time of year), and should only be used in engines on their last legs in a vain attempt to maintain oil pressure...

On my auto Mini the thicker oil kept the oil leaks down. I've only ever used 20/50 or 15/50 oil in my Minis. In comparison our Fiesta uses 5/30 oil, that's almost like pouring water into the engine compared to the stuff in the Mini.
