Any chance you would consider something smaller than a 1.7, i never would have considered driving a car that size (purely for insurance reasons) a year after i passed my test, and i passed my test 13 years ago. if i had only been driving for a year at present day insurance prices 1.3 would probably be my limit.

That was my limit too when I passed my test, anything higher and the insurance would just be too much for me.

My advise would be to get something smaller, older and less cc (Fiesta, Corsa, Punto, Cinquecento, Metro etc.).

I think the Ford Puma is insurance group 12, whilst that's not the highest rating in the world, it's still quite high when you consider that your sprite is only group 4!! I've always found "Swiftcover" pretty competitive when it comes to insuring modern cars, I know from experience that they are pretty good in the event of a claim too.

I'm with Swiftcover on my Focus as they were cheapest for me.

i know that much but hoped people would read between the lines without spelling it out.

Sorry maybe I'm being a bit thick here, but you really have lost me on that one, so I'm afraid you'll just have to spell it out.

As far as I'm aware in order to make use of any third party cover on other vehicles, the other vehicle has to be insured on its own policy, otherwise your third party cover is not valid on that vehicle. So I can't see how reading anything "between the lines" changes that?? :)

sorry exactly what you said is what i was getting at, but i didnt know whether the idea would be frowned upon if i spelt it out?

how can an insurance company tell you who drives a car more often...?
if you drive your mini for 9months of the year then use another car (owned and insured by another person) over the winter (keeping the mini safe) then so long as your insurance covers you 3rd party on other vehicles, is there a problem??

this is kindof what im aiming for atm.

Scott who's eighteen has just had a quote for just over £2k for a 1.2 VW Polo which is by far the cheapest he's had and that's with Elephant. He did look at 106's corsa's etc but they were even more expensive.

That's £2k fully comp by the way with no NCB. You really can't win but it does pay to ring around as well as using the internet, we still have a few companies to try yet.

Right a quick change to the above, Scott went to check his original quote and in less than 7 days the damn thing has gone up by £600 what the hell do the insurance companies think they are doing. They will force first timers to go without insurance and run all of the associated risks. Its bloody stupid.

Also they cannot make their minds up with regards to the insurance ratings for a 1.2 Polo. There are several models. E S SE Twist. Now the E which is the basic model is more expensive than the S so what gives??? :) :(

I think elephant are the best. I'm with them, 19 years old with a 1.6 2009 Corsa and with 2 adults on the policy im still paying £2600, but it's bloody worth it because I love my car that much and some of the quotes I was getting from the other places were mad!!

Like already said, if you haven't already try admiral because I think they were also quite reasonable and elephant.

Edit: Spelling

just to clear up the thing going on above.

to drive another car using your insurance it will only be third party and the other car must be insured by the person who owns it /the keeper.
therefore the op is still going to have to fork out to pay someone else to insure it. and then if he was to have a crash or it got stolen then it wouldnt be repaired. leaving him with only the mini again.

however, even if this was the case. he has his mini on a classic policy which has a clause stating that you are not insured to drive any other car on that policy. whats the point in limiting the milage you can do if you just use other cars instead.

but to be honest i wouldnt be grumbling at paying £600 to insure a puma. ive driven a couple of my brother in laws and it was a pretty good car, especially cruising at 120

a puma isnt the best bet for a winter car either to be honest, itll probably cope worse than the mini. they re renound for the rear subframes rotting and the wheel arches.

Seconded.

When I was with Quinn Direct, my policy said I could drive another persons car third party if I had the owners permission. However, I knew about the 25+ rule so gave them and call to check and they said I had to be 25 or over to do that.

Maggies_minder, I'd call your insurance and check before you decide to use that feature of your insurance policy.

It is true that the "third party cover on other vehicles" is often a feature for over 25's only, but some insurers do give that option to younger drivers though so maggies_minder may well have that type of cover. I first had that feature on my policy when I was only nineteen (not that there was much point in having it at that age though!! Strangely at 19 years old I was unable to convince anyone to let me anywhere near the driving seat of their car, let alone to actually drive it with only third party cover!! :D )

Wowzers been on honeymoon and just remembered this topic lol!

Well I got the puma in the end, very bright yellow 'millenium' edition only 36k on the clock. The 1.7 vct engine made by yamaha for ford is a revvy beast zoooom, just waiting for cambelt to be changed now as its way over due.
Got insurance for 600 in the end with admiral, its high for me though 30, only had car licence just over a year but, sure does seem a lot cheaper than some of the posts are saying here!

As for keeping mini nice during winter, still plan to drive it but just try not when know theres salt etc down, which could be a few weeks i know.
Idea for puma was mroe comfort to as daily driver. My mini is insured for 2.5k and I think well worth that for condition it is in at the moment.

We are hoping to move soon so one car might have to go but hope I can keep both!

Thanks for all the replies, seems insurance is truly a rip off and glad im not 17 at the moment!
Silly things like why is my 12 yrs road experience on a bike not taken in to account? a lot of specialist companies
wanted me to have car licence for 2-5 years! aahhhhh
