No doug, it's just me being over cautious and scaremongering due to crap Switches that run close to their threshold. I shall continue wiring with a 'belt and braces' approach - peace of mind.

There is nothing wrong with caution. I have added relays for my headlights, horn, and the backup light that I added. In all cases my goal was to minimize the current load on the switches.

yeah thinking about it the lights aren't gonna be that much load on it any way. and I did recently put a new switch on there.

The relay idea is a good one, but its too many belts and braces for three little bulbs. But thanks for your opinions

anyone fancy knocking up a really simple wiring diagram for the lighting of aux gauges??

(see the last post on the previous page).

Just to support Retro_10s side of the argument, I tried to wire three extra bulbs into my lighting circuit two days ago, and subsequently lost the wipers, washer, heater blower, revcounter, and lights.

Suspects at the moment are the lights switch (which has always been a bit tempermental) and the fuse box.

Be aware, when messing with Mini wiring, it's electrics are crappier than average.

I've just recently wired in a set of gauges using the wire that lights up the dashboard.

If you remove the binnacle around the dials and disconnect the mutliplug and speedo cable and remove them for better access - on the mutliplug look for a wire that is green with a thin red line (hopefully BL/Rover haven't changed the wiring colours since the 70's!). This wire controls the power for the dash lights, splice into this one and job done!

Make sure you earth the circuit as well otherwise you'll get nowt! I used the brackets that hold my dials in place and all seems well and works nicely when I switch the headlights on.

Just found this topic, I am this week hopefully going to wire in my three extra gauges.

One of them is a clock, any idea how to get a permanent live feed to it?

Cheers

here is what I did, wired up together and fed directly into the side light circuit. Been fine with no issues .

Im now thinking of changing to LED lights to get them a bit brighter......

As for power for the clock, I took a feed directly off the fuse box under the bonnet.

Take a permanent feed from either the fuse box or starter solenoid (which will need a suitable size fuse for the guage wire). Simples.

im running 3 aux guages off the light circuit (water temp needs a feed from the engine), when i switch my lights on (even just to sidelights) the rev counter drops to 0 regardless of load and revs of the engine, what could be causing this?
