I will continue with this (as and when I get the time) and keep you posted of any developments.

Well done Tanya!
As this is also part of the history and heritage of the MINI Plant in Oxford where Alec Issigonis once worked on his Morris Minor and MIni, do you think anyone at BMW could be persuaded to take up the cause with the council if it were brought to their attention.......and perhaps fund the cost of making and installing some signs for "Alec Issigonis Way" in the Oxford Business Park. It would certainly generate some good local media publicity for them and perhaps a gathering of Mini's and Minors could gather at the Plant for the official unveiling!

My experience with BMW is that they are very reluctant to do anything for the community. I used to play for a hockey team (Rover Oxford) which was supported by Rover, however after their demise BMW wanted no further dealings with the club, and I assume the same could be said for the other sports clubs that were previously affiliated with Rover and Pressed steel. They wouldn't be my first port of call.

A bit of an update. I emailed the developer of the Business Park to see if there had been any progress. Here is his reply.

We are in the process of obtaining costs to erect new Issigonis Way signs - please bear with us

I will keep you updated on progress when there is something to report.

Today I recieved the following email and attachment.

Attached File  Alec street sign.pdf   164.32K   86 downloads

Please see the above road sign proposal which has been approved today and will be erected shortly.

I'm not sure what 'shortly' really means, so I have asked him! Looks like this is going to simpler than I first thought - I hope I haven't jinked it!

I’m just surprised that all I needed to do was ask! Normally you have to mount a campaign in order to get the most simple and necessary tasks completed! Still, I'm not complaining :D

Well done Tanya. Good work, I'll keep an eye out through my office window to see if any council vans turn up to install the sign.
Also they currently in the process of building a massive new building on the science park (think its some head office development for a gas company) so I wonder if they will cover the cost of the sign during any works to the roads for the development?...just goes to show if you don't ask you don't get! :)

Great news and well done  ...............like you I thought this would be a long slow process for official approval and finance based on previous experiences of dealing with local authorities, etc. Perhaps they have realised what an oversight it was to name a road after such a famous local person and then forget to put up any signs!!

Well, I reported the absense of the street name sign to Oxford City Council yesterday via their website and this was their automated reply. This report will be investigated within one working day and, if appropriate, actioned within 5 working days. I don’t think the road opposite ‘Garsington Road’ has a street sign either.

I haven’t heard anything yet, so at some point I will try and find a phone number and ask. Failing that, I will contact the City Councillor for that ward and ask them to investigate. I have told the City Council that I am sure that local minis would love to be involved in the sign’s unveiling when it arrives. I'm sure Morris Minor people would like to be involved too and I need to contact the Morris Minor Owners Club this week on a different matter, so I will ask them then.

I’ll keep you posted as to how I get on.

that sounds great, also i should be driving soon so hopefully will if this happens make it to the opening of this road which has been there for many years if not i know where it is ill cycle haha

Ashley

EDIT : im useless with this forum, i always forget to check if theres more pages and havent been on in a while so miss on most thigs owell.....
thats a cool sign should have 9x in the corner the prototype mini, ill go down with a TMF sticker and stick close by

I think its the same reason Abbey Road has no road sign... because it's a Mecca for Beatles fans... prone to either theft or graffiti.

Abbey road does have street signs, there are a fair few to be honest.
I live directly behind the studios and the tourists do get very annoying!

Well, the sign has arrived :D

Posted Image

Here it is with 89mini-boy (Ashley) and his Mini Liquorice, scissor-cut25 (Lucy), Jet Black Jamie (my son, Jamie) and my Mini, Mr Bump, oh, and the sunshine too! :D

Next job is to work on an official unveiling, which for some reason the developer is none too keen on. It is very quiet round there at the weekend so I don’t see the problem in getting a few Minis, Morris Minors, a significant Mini (or I suppose Morris Minor) person to carry out the unveiling and some press together for a bit of a celebration. I would welcome suggestions (realistic and unrealistic!) about who I should approach to officially unveil the sign.
