Model: City E Auto
Year: 1988

Non-standards: K+N filter

Hi all,

My girlfriend is off to uni in Liverpool... 200 miles from here. So I either need to swap my mini for something better for the miles... but I would much rather keep it.

Any suggestions on how I make it more of a motorway mile muncher. I have decided to change the filter back, as its rather noisey at the moment. I have some soundproofing on its way for the bulkhead, to replace what the mice ate whilst I was rebuilding it.

Any other suggestions ? ? ?

Thanks in advance

Would it not be cheaper to go by train?

How much money you got? Go for a nice torquey 1380 with a low FD as above?

Well the City E has a 2.9 diff anyway so I would say just try to get the engine running perfectly then fit lots of soundproofing!

hi
thats true on a manual, but he's got a auto, stick in a 1293 with a 3.44 and five speed, or as said take the train.

Your auto will easily cope with 70mph or should do if it is in a good state of tune.....

The final drive on an auto of that year.. should be 3.27:1 so it is already fairly high....

Do a full check and service... One of my Mini's used to do 89 miles each way ... each day for 2.25 years.... with only minor repairs.

my girlfriend back in the uk used to live in swansea, and i lived in nottingham  240 miles, and i used to go for the odd weekend sometimes :P

i loved it, as long as you've got a radio and you can put some good songs on, just enjoy it :)

If you're doing miles like that regularly, the Mini is not suitable- just being honest!!!

You'll only scrape 30mpg with an auto. Do what I did, spend £500 on a 106 diesel- it never, ever returns less than 60mpg. With that fuel economy, the Pug will pay for itself in no time at all and leave you to enjoy the Mini.

If your that bothered about the noise of the filter/lack of soundproofing etc, just buy some ear plugs.

95% of issues with mileage are down to improper repairs or parts used..... the other 5% is down to driver preferences, ie used to dring a Rolls Royce... etc....
