I did a fair few miles on the motorway in my old 1275, make sure you've plenty of spares and tools etc, (that's not mini specific advise either) I had a 3.1 diff 13" wheels and 58bhp at the wheels. Used to be brillaint, plenty of over taking power past 70, though it was only when the roads were busy that I used to stick at 70. It was noisey but I had no sound insulation, I used to use head phones. Most I've done in my mini was over 300 miles one Sunday.
The only problem I had was the exhaust falling off on the motorway at about 70 luckily I was about to pull off and it actually came off when I was just about on the sliproad. Managed to bodge it back on with some speaker cable, which kept snapping! Was a nightmare. Then the diff went (standard pin full lock, a fair bit of a power and bang) in September not on the motorway thankfully and I've been longing to get the mini back on the road since.

If your engine number is intact then this decoder works a treat! If not then you need to get the trolley jack and some white chalk out. Ill leave the explaining for if you have no engine number.

I drove my mini to Glasgow a few times, 450 miles about 9 hours each way, only stopping for fuel, at one stage it had a 1330 with full race camshaft, straight cut drops, twin carbs, etc. final drive was a 3.65, so at 4,000rpm i was doing 65mph in top gear. Was a killer, but we managed to drag it out and cope with it, had intercoms to speak to each other, lol

You need to think laterally here and also get your priorities straight!! So just keep your mini as it is and get her to visit you instead ("bring the mountain to mohammed" and all that  )...... not that I'm describing your girlfriend as a "mountain" or anything.... I mean I'm sure she's nowhere near that big.... erm... errr.... I think I'll shut up now.... >_<

Haha... thoroughly enjoyed reading these responses. I just drove back 30 miles on the motorway, and to be honest, I can deal with it. It does need a tune, as it does seem to be drinking a little bit.

Getting rid of the mini is NOT an option... dont think I could bare too... I have considered the 106 idea... which is nice, but again... I can really only afford to insure the one car at the moment.

She doesn't drive and train journey is like 10hours I think... not ideal.

I'm quite happy with driving the distance, but think I may pay someone to tune it with the correct tools, and no doubt have alot more experience than me.

Well sound proofing has turned up today... and will fit it soon

General concensus: DEAL WITH IT... but I think your right. I dont really mind
