thats not the sump plug!!
the sump plug is on the side of the gearbox

as you look at the car from the front its on the left hand side of the sump.

looking at the car, bottom left hand side of the gearbox, it should be in a little recess.

Personally if you and your mate thought that was the oil drain then i think you both should think twice about an oil change before you damage your car, get some hands on advice from a local club member or enrol in a basic car servicing course at your local college would be my advice.

Also remember to do this with the engine switched off.... ;D

And drain in to a big enough can, bigger than 1 UK gallon, 8 pints, 4.5 litres etc....

For the selector pivot spindle to fall out there must have been something seriously wrong with the gearbox, as it's fairly firmly held in by a 3/8" UNF nyloc nut....

They can leak... as there's an O ring seal in there which can perish and more often than not is over looked when gearboxes are put back together.
