I'm at work which is why im on so early, but reading the thread and stories.... wow. This is a brilliant start to a morning Uncle cooperman LOVE THESE STORIES amazing haha so far favorite has got to be the rally one!!!! with 850 mini 16BOJ.

as everyone asks, Keep them coming.

Ashley.

16BOJ was probably the most famous 850 rally Mini ever. It was actually built by the 'Works' for David hiam who was Dunlop Tyres Rally Manager and he was also a great driver. Peter Gilbert bought it from him. Now Peter is a great guy who ran the Passport Photo Service in Oxford Street. He and I are still great friends after 50 years and he lent 16BOJ to Bill Rogers and me when we were leading the London Counties Championship in 1963 and Bill's car was a bit poorly, mine was not prepared for rallying, although we woulkd have used if if we had to, but Pete insisted we used 16BOJ and we kept our lead with a solid 2nd overall. I once borrowed it to drive on an autocross and I had a great first timed run, but after a guy called Mike Benton rolled a Mini he had borrowed from Mo Mendham I slowed down a bit in case the same happened to me. On an earlier autocross, in 1962, Mo wanted to try out a Morris 1100 in competition, so he hired one and put the comp number on the doors with some sort of emulsion paint, which he couldn't get off when it was time to return the hire car, so we took it to Watford and used cutting compond on both doors. It didn't half shine then!
One day Peter, who lived in Luton, was driving through Park street in BOJ when a large alsation ran in to the road and took out 2 of BOJ's spotlights. It didn't do the dog much good either. A young lady, who was the dog's owner, stood on the pavement screaming "is it dead, is it dead?" A bus driver leaned out of his cab and said "Of course the f*****g thing's dead, but it wouldn't be if you had kept it on a f*****g lead". Pete had to buy a new grille and new Marchal spotlights.

Also, I met my first wife when we all went to a party at Bill Roger's family home in 1962, travelling there in 16BOJ. So he's got a lot to answer for.
My first wife had a Mini Van and one night shortly after we were married I'd been helping a friend in Luton do some work on his Mini and was driving home in the Mini Van with my tools in the back at about 1-00 am. In those days the Old bill used to do random stops and sure enough I got stopped in Hitchin. The very young cop asked me to open the rear doors and when he saw my tool kit stated, in all seriousness, that I appeared to be 'equipped for housebreaking' (I kid you not). This kinda pissed me off so I said "Yes, I really need a torque wrench, a 1/2" square drive socket set, a ball-pin splitter, a 'tower-tool', a flywheel puller and a load of UNF spanners to gain access to a house, don't I. Let's go to your nick and discuss it with your guv'nor".
"That's OK sir, you may go".
"Yes", says I, "I f*****g thought so!"

uncle cooperman your stories just get funnier and funnier... BOJ seems to have been quite a large part of your life, where does he sleep these days in his old age?

I believe it was scrapped when the shell was really rusty. Imagine what it would be worth now, fully restored and with that provenance.

Do you know Warrick Banks by any chance Peter? He lives just up the road from me. Knows my parents quite well. Apparently he used to do a bit of racing with Paddy Hopkirk and raced the Mini for BMC in touring events.

I've not met him, but I do know of him by reputation and he is a very good friend of my good friend Barrie (Whizzo) Williams. Barrie owns a Cooper 'S' reg 120MNP which is the first Cooper 'S' ever to win an international rally, with Barrie driving, when it won the Welsh Int. in Jan 1964 just before Paddy won the Monte in 33EJB.
If you want an interesting story involving the history of the Mini in rallying, Google: Mini 24PK and do nthe PDF Download. This car was owned by Sir Peter Moon who crashed it on the 1964 Manx Rally and Barrie and I had to get it back to the mainland by towing it. Read the full story for a great laugh. It was just hilarious.
