Head Unit Wiring - Using A Voltmeter

I have a cheap head unit which i am looking to wire in, i have the bundle of cables in the dash which are standard with most minis :P Red (which i presume is switched live) Brown (constant live i suppose) Black ( believed to be ground) the actual speaker wires, aerial and some other bits and bobs which will be lights and what not so what i want to know is how do i actually check to make sure im correct ( with a voltmeter ) before i start electricuting myself ( it hurts ! )
