I converted to Mac halfway through my first year of uni. I graduated last week.

Having used windows for 10 years or so and having gone through numerous computers and laptops due to irreparable hardware malfunctions, overheating, battery problems, getting viruses every 10 minutes I decided to try a mac and have never experienced better customer service in my life.

The mac has never crashed on me, got any viruses and is still as quick today as it was when i bought it 3 years ago. In fact, its just as good if not quicker than my brothers 6 month old Sony Vaio.

The battery did have a problem about 3 months ago however so went down to the Apple store who immediately took it in and said it would be fixed by the next morning. Whilst still in the shopping centre, I got a call about an hour later saying it was ready for collection.

Literally couldn't believe my ears. Went back and it was fixed perfectly. They even replaced the outer shell which had become a bit grubby after a few years constant use to boot.

These are only my experiences but I can categorically guarantee I'll never go back to a Windows based computer ever again.

Windows 7 is an excellent OS, but Snow Leopard/ Lion are equally as adept at everything, are much more user friendly and intuitive as well as looking and functioning much more attractively.

From various reports I have read it does seem the Apple customer care is fantastic. There will always be the odd bad example, but in the main its good stuff.

I did look at the Series 9 from Samsung but as its a similar price, that pretty means it loses to the Air for me straight away. The price is the key issue I think.

As for desktops, I know you can get a lot more power. However, I don't really do PC gaming (I have a PS3 and XBox 360, and an iPhone for portable gaming) or HD movie editing so don't really need the power. I have a PS3 and XBox 360. And due to moving around all the time, its not practical. But even if I did have a desktop, I'd be upgrading it all the time and in the end it becomes constant spending.

The Air is stunning to look at as well.

£1200 for a crappy laptop?

£1200 could buy me a top of range fully watercooled gaming PC. SSD's & all..

:|

Everyone I know who owns a mac thinks they work in media. when they dont. They use it for facebook lol... fail

I work in media and prefer PC's, I like making blu-rays... oh stop. (don't mention flash)

£1200 for a watercooled PC top spec? hmmm... try 3K plus mate to do it properly.

Personally I'd spend £1200 on a laptop PC you'll get alot more usable tech for your money.

does anyone here use a mac and actually work it hard? i worked in an office which was exclusively mac and the great myth of them not crashing got busted in my first week!! we were working on 3d models/cad stuff and the difference i found with a pc and mac, is that you can usually diagnose the reasons for certain crashes on a pc easily, so can then remedy them, couldn't figure that out on a mac (but could just be me!)
the monitors were great (but way too expensive to have at home for me, would cost more than my whole pc set up!)

I'm a psycholgist and use my Mac daily. It's used both at my desk and on the road, conducting/writing research and presenting. I use a mac because they seem a lot more reliable when I'm out and about. The last thing I want when giving a lecture is for my computer to fail! Most people I meet who have a similar role also use Macs.

Microsoft Office has crashed twice on my mac :)

so it's ideal for writing and presenting, i'd imagine any 1k+ laptop would deal with that ok (but maybe not look quite as good doing it!)

Ah see I like overkill, dual SLI watercooled 590's... at nearly £600 a piece would eat up that budget pretty quickly!
I don't see it as overkill, just "Top Spec" in my eyes is a little closer to the 3k mark, then another 3k for triple IPS panels...
I7 2600k is a good chip to clock mind, well done, and for building it to that budget another thumbs up.

I'd rather not give my money to Dell, (Alienware is Dell).
