hi guys,

My projects really testing me right now. i've got my new door hinges as the old ones had sheared off. I cannot for the life of me get the bolts out of the door! the heads have fallen off the screws.

i've tried using specialist screw extractors, tough metal drill bits and heat and nothing!

any ideas? i really need them out to get the new ones on!

any advice appreciated.

ive got the hinges off now its just the bolts inside the door. i've broken 18 drill bits drilling them out =/

mine were seized on too. took the door to a locak bodyshop and he used an air chisel to knock it round till it freed up. Another option that I am toying with on a spare door I have is to weld a nut onto the screw head for a diferent approach on another stuck screw.

So what you are saying now is that the hinges are off and you are trying to drill out the remainder of the broken bolt?? Was there any part of the bolt protruding enough to get mole grips on?? if not and you keep burning out drill bits then either you are using to fast a speed to drill or the bits you have are either blunt or just toffee.

Slow your speed down and use some lubricant something like WD40 will do and use a decent brand new drill bit. If this does not sort your issues then you will need to buy a cobalt drill bit. If you get a cobalt drill bit THEN YOU WILL need to use a slow speed setting and do use some lube. (Please wear goggles)

If you damage the hole and thread then your next problem is the nut plate. These are welded to the door frame so you could weld new nuts on but this is difficult due to their position.

You would then need to drill out the spot welds, remove the nut plate weld on new nuts then weld the nut plate back on again.

Drilled out half the drill bits, couldnt get the rest out so hit them through!! damaged the nuts on the back so bolted the hinges on. When i get some more money i need two new/used doors but its like 800quid for two new doors!

Anyway, they're on, just dont hang completely right. to be honest, i only really need a driver side door.

Just read this, the same happened to me. What i did was put a thin cutting disc in the grinder and cut three sides of a square shape on the inside of the door and peeled it back to reveal the captive plate that the bolts fasten into. I then clamped a pair of vice grips onto the bit of the bolt that was protruding out of the plate and turned the bolt out of the plate, ie into the door. Then pushed the bit of the door that i cut back down and welded it back up. I know this is too late for you but someone else might need to give it a go, sorry bud!

You can get second hand doors an awful lot less than £800 a pair.

Coming to it I do. Lives in teesside. He has them on eBay at the minute.
