hi,

basically the top bit of my windscreen scuttle is badly rusted on both sides of the car and because the wings on the car look in a good conditions, i was advised to buy a budget windscreen scuttle from M machine and cut the pieces i need. I have cut out the rusted which i will show u below however the metal bit in the inside of the car where the dash goes looks kinda rusty so i thought i post some pics to see what u guys think ???

also i tried to remove the driver side doors but the bolts all seems cut in half on one side and very difficult to get hold of it. I will be changing inner and outer sills so i thought it would be a good idea to take out the doors. i have poked through the rust shown in the pictures and it hasnt gone through so iam assuming its surface rust :/

I have also been practicing my welding on clarke 135 turbo and i think iam nearly there to achieve an okay weld.

Hi,

personally I would replace the whole scuttle panel, if it's that bad over the whole width then it wont be long before the rest of it goes !! Also easier to replace the whole panel than patch that I feel.

Door hinges, I would cut the nuts off very carefully with a grinder if you need to keep the hinge bolts. I am drilling out the old bolts on mine a nd welding in new ones to ease things up.

Just my ideas!

Graham

trust me i would be more than happy to replace the whole panel but my wings are completely fine and iam a beginner so its very difficult to carry out a full scuttle replace without causing damage to the wings etc.

I'm with you on that one, I'm in a similar position, because I replaced the wings, A panels and front panel a while back, but didn't bother doing the scuttle at the time :- . The other issue with replacing the whole scuttle (particularly for a beginner), is that unless you get the new one lined up in exactly the right place, the windscreen won't go back in again  So cutting out the rusty sections and welding new metal in with the old scuttle still in situ, is certainly the safer option from that perspective.

Keep us updated with your progress on this, I'll be interested to see how yours turns out, for when I get around to doing mine! :errr:

EDIT: Bn the way, how are you intending to join the new metal to the edge of the old scuttle? Are you planning to joggle the edges of the new sections and slide/overlap them underneath the edge of the old scuttle, or try and butt weld them in?

I can see where you're coming from with the repair and a cheepo scuttle will be fine for that.

The panel behind that(dash rail) looks to be in a bad way though and will need some considerable repairs. Can you do these repairs with the rest of the scuttle in place?

cut the middle section of the scuttle out in line with the wings and replace the bulk of it. trying to weld along the length of the scuttle will be a pain to say the least.

Thats a much better way of doing it. Its kinda like a reverse version of replacing the end pieces!

I never remove the doors by undoing those nuts under the wing any more. They cause all sorts of problems and are always corroded to hell because of where they are. I now leave the hinges in situ and unbolt the doors themselves from the hinges. The bolts that hold the hinges to the doors are far better protected from the elements, so there are none of those issues. :-

aw will keep u update. i havnt cut the new scuttle panel yet, need to do some measurements to decide how to fit them together. alot of people told me overlapping will sometimes cause metal to rust quicker

nothing on my slaptop to do drawing with sorry.

if you follow the line of the inner wing/wing lip across the scuttle and slice most of the scuttle out. you'll need it out of the way to repair the bulkhead/window lip anyway.

Hi,

think Anon means cut this section out

Posted Image

You will still have the scuttle ends to use as lining up reference points, but do a dry run with the window before welding in.

Undo the door strap so that you can open the door to 90 degrees. Get someone to hold the door open for you though, other wise if you push the door open too far, the door skin will crease against the edge of A-Panel :-

Sorry, but I don't understand this bit??? :errr:
