Much as I like watching the occasional banger race with scrap modern cars, why use rare classic cars of any kind? :closed:

XUOLfLQjsoU

RIP the 100 or so ageing Austin Westminsters and their Wolseley equivalents that were trashed in a banger race at the Arlington Stadium, near Hailsham in East Sussex. The Westminster was introduced at the 1954 Motor Show and continued in production until 1967, with 101,634 built.

Today, fewer than 500 are said to exist — and a fifth of them were at the event. Nick Larkin, of Classic Car Weekly, said: ‘I really do think anyone involved with this event should hang their head in shame. These were rare cars and part of our heritage.’

:w00t:

It has to be said... This meeting was epic, no other word for it. So much better to watch than the usual modern cr*p.

They are running an all Rover P4 & P5 meet next year too, it should be better as there are more Rovers around to choose from so hopefully more cars on track.

I already have a tidy P5 coupe in the corner waiting to get its face smashed in.

I don't understand the mentality of wanting to destroy cars that are older that most of the competitors and spectators.

A lot of people dont.. Its the same with a lot of hobbies.
I cant see the point of sitting by a river bank watching a brightly coloured stick or hitting a ball across a field only to walk across and hit it again.

Horses for courses

 Fair point.

ok, from my side of the fence smashing up a car is one hell of a buzz.. no matter what the age of it. I do understand peoples opinions on racing classics and to be fair some of the cars raced is a real shame but most are beyond repair for most which is why and how they end up in our hands. These cars are always for sale on "The Bay" and such or sat in barns, gardens etc.
There is nothing stopping other people including Mr Larkin from buying these cars to restore/preserve them.. ok maybe funds.

Each man to his own and all that !

Craig, thats a bit uncalled for mate, I know Lee (toyboy396) and I know you so its not nice to read

I sit by the riverbank watching my brightly coloured stick (carp fishing) and I also hit and walk across a field looking for the ball I hit, its just a hobbie. But posting this on a classic car based forum is almost pointless? what are people gonna say?

I know what they are gonna post on say a sewing machine forum? basically who cares its just an old s****y car, what about the new needle thats out....... (not speaking from experience here!)

OP has posted it up here as they are concerned about the numbers, others fourms don't care, as Lee said its horses for courses :-

I was once a "pikey"

I built an ex-police mk4 cortina into a banger for the last ever banger race at our local track.

I also used to race autograss and from the age of 14-16 probably destroyed more classic minis than most members will own in their entire life.

I really enjoyed watching the "World banger finals" at wimbledon every year as well(not been for several!!). SD1s, granda coupes you name it!!

I'm not sure I agree with one marque races, especially when numbers of them are so low.

What the hell do you mean "once" did you pass an exam or something?

Only to the people who care, to them probably nowt, its just a car? they probably don't do a google search before entering one :-

I'm just saying posting it on here is like a red flag to a bull and will make people bite, if anyone here is worried then do a facebook campaign, I'm right behind you

P.s I'm not on facebook :-

Bleeding good fun though, the last race was a fight to the death. My car got hit so hard it bent the propshaft!!

The first race I lost all brakes!!

Happy days!!

Perhaps not the best word to use then!! Sorry to anybody offended!

I've just never seen the point in it. It always seems to be the rarer cars that are getting thin on the ground that are completely wrecked in the name of this form of motorsport...

Grass track/autograss etc I can understand, I guess each to their own of course, but to me smashing cars into eachother shouldnt be fun!

And all the poor Metros! Makes me feel a bit sad
