Hi Bungle, I hope you don't mind but I edited one of your images slightly as I thought it could have been further worked on!

Posted Image

Notice the increased blur from front to back. A lot of these images aren't working so well as there is not enough distance between the foreground and background, or the contrast between foreground and background blur is not enough.

The illusion works much better too when the camera is higher than the subject (imagine looking down on a model village), with a greater distance covered in the image. Higher saturation works well too as it gives the effect of highly stylised, or painted models.

Yes I am a photographer. lol. Sorry to be picky! :)

this works because it makes them look like macro photography which basicaly uses a magnifing glass as a lens, to make the images look better on things on the same plain as the subject should be in focus, i have a load of macro shots http://callumcooper.tumblr.com/page/3

still playing and trying to get used to getting the focal range right but the fun will now be trying to set up future pictures to make the most of this function.

cheers

The pic of the yellow and red mini is awesome. I had to look closely to make sure it wasn't a toy.

yeah, it is tilt-shift, its a type of lens but the artificial effect can be acheived with photoshop and probably other software too..works best from above in my opinon, here's my attemp from a while back, often increasing saturation also helps!

I had a go but I only have microsoft paint and instagram on my Ipod haha, it's not brilliant, can only tilt shift in one straight line and it's a bit close to the minis...

I tried it on a photo of mine a while back. I don't think it works so well with a close up, but it gave a cool effect.

There are some really great examples here! I've been saving for a real tilt shift lens for a while now (they're massively expensive)! The effect is from shifting the angle of the plane of focus, but as most have done, can be recreated by using a blended Gaussian blur above and below the centre of the photograph.
