Did an engine for my son when he was 17 which is over 15 years ago but the Mini would out run a Pug 1.6 GTi from the lights and keep pulling away from it right up to 90 mph.

Don't know the bhp but heres the spec....

1293 motor
Modified Howley inlet
Modified HIF 44 (doctored needle)
K+N type filter with cold air feed
Modified MG Metro head with 'penny on a stick' valves
LCB with single big bore back box
Lightened flywheel and backplate
Modified distributor (home made)
Kent 286 cam
3.4 diff
Electric fan

I recon 80+ bhp, it would pull 105 on the speedo but prob a bit fast. according to the gearing it was doin 98ish at 6500 ish
Rev counter not calibrated so guess work really :D

Them were the days

Why do we still do this!! I'm just as bad,I think it is Keith Calver who refers to it as pub talk.Max BHP comes up ,what, 5500 to 6500? How long do our road cars spend at those sort of revs? We all like a bit of acceleration and to accelerate you need to be going slower and then become faster than you were going.TORQUE! is what does that.So what did I do? went along to the local RR'd and asked what BHP I had! Didnt even think about the torque. Oh well. I was happy to find out that my 1275 has 90.5 without being set up;only tested. It has:-
Piper 270 cam
Twin hif 38s /Cone filters/AAA needles
Maniflow LCB, 1 3/4" two silencer straight system
10.8:1 cr
MG Metro head (36/29 valves),Deshrouded the valves A very small amount of opening up of the inlet tracts, fair amount of work to the exhausts,I did fit the 2 extra head studs.
Megajolt ignition, fiddled with alot by myself
Two blade fan- worth 2 hp?
Flywheel lightened and 3.44 fd ratio-not related to the output, just the acceleration.
It has horrible bores and smokes on start up,uses a little oil so in top codition and properly set up maybe would nudge 100 hp?.but I'm impressed with the fact that it pulls well from 2000 and thats very useable
Cost? not sure, paid £30 for the engine,£60 for piston rings and gaskets and £60 for the head, £175 megajolt.£40 for twin inlet manifold,£40 for the extra carb(I already had one 38 from the original engine) Just add up the cost of the other parts plus a head skim. The rest I did myself

My first 998 had 42bhp and 43ft/lb of torque @ 5150 rpm

It was a 998 with a stage 1 kit had it dynoed before i fitted the stage one kit and it was 36bhp.

Upgraded to a 1380 which on the last dyno run 73bhp and 79.4 ft/lb @ 6556 rpm

Spec...
1380 with powermax pistons,
Kent 276 cam
Duplex timing gear
Balanced crank
Standard 1275 head
Hiff 44 Carb
MG Metro inlet manifold
Electronic Distributor
Center main strap
Pipercross air filter
Standard Box with 3.44 Final drive ratio
Double valve springs

Building up a 1310 atm which will have a weber 40, megajolt, stae 3 head and some bits from my 1380.
