Hi guys.

I asked a question before about where to put the speakers I've decided to make a kick board which I made yesterday and it fits nice, however what sort of carpet should I use to cover it?

I haven't bought speakers yet but am going for 6x9's in the back, if they're not enough and the sound is behind me and sounds awful I will make some front speker pods too.

With the wiring, do I need a certain gauge of wire for the permanent live switched lie and earth?

Also, with the speaker cable is there a certain gauge I should use? I've seen 4mm or 0.75mm and others in Halfords (not that I'd buy anying from those rip off merchants)

Thanks again, will post pics when it's done should look good!

Edit: by the way I am getting these 6x9's, which seem to be ok. They do the same speaker in 13cm, so maybe those will be better? http://audiovisualwo...e-Car-Speakers-

Bump!

Bought the 6x9's and speaker cable now, just need to know what gauge of wire I need for the permanent live, switched live and earth? Also do I need a fuse on the live?

Any takers? Cheers

Permanent and switched live and earth is for head unit

Will probably be using head unit, as my amp is probs too powerful for my sub so will have to use a smaller amp that will only be able to handle the sub!

Thanks

It won't hurt to fuse them both, I do but then I have both wired to perm live.

And what's this about an amp ' too powerful for a sub' ? Who told you that???
What are the specs... Nothing is incompatible if set up right..

I heard if the amp is high powered and the sub isn't then it would fry the amp, think it was in the definitive ice guide on here maybe, but maybe not.

As i have an 8 inch sub, with an alpine amp that came with it. The amp is small enough to be bolted onto the sub box. I also have a 12 inch jbl (100 anniversary edition if I remember correctly) with matching amp. Was gonna use the jbl amp with the smaller sub, can let you know what the specs are when I get home :) but was thinking that the bigger amp could handle both the small sub and the speakers

Not true unless your an idiot with the volume.

Ok in basic terms.

Tuned engine stock gear box. Driver it hard going to kill the box very quickly. Drive it soft and never fully open the taps, box will be fine.

In fact if you set the gains up correctly it's like restricting the thottle so you can't over drive it.

I currently have amps that well over rate my speakers, but I just let the amps work gently it's best to have power in reserve instead of pushing an amp to it's limits.
It's called headroom.

Rarely have I seen a speaker die due to, too much power. But I've seen many with burnt voice coils due to to liitle being pushed to hard and pushed in to clipping/square wave...

Also is it a 4 channel amp then ?

That amp could never run your whole system, its a 2 channel amp and have 3 channels (front speaker pair and the sub).

The amp and sub look like a good match.

And take those narsty Sony xplop 6x9's back ASAP.
6x9's are the work of the devil and to compound the problem they are Sony xplode, which is the one of the worst brands on the market if not the worst :( sorry to say.

Head units nice.

Small 6.5" comps up front run off the head unit.
Sub in the boot run of the amp.
Get a another 2 channel amp as soon as you can for the fronts. Something like 50 to 80 Rms per channel.

Done.

Oh no I thought the speakers were averagely ok! They were like £30, i didnt want to spend much as i dont have alot of money at the moment!

Are 6x9's really all that bad then? Is it best to put some other speakers under the rear seats? I don't want to do any cutting really, as the car is all original inside and mint condition, it would seem a shame to change anything.

Is there anything else you could reccomend for under rear seats?

Also, that boston sub, is it any good? When I took it out to have a look at the spec it seemed pretty well made. £5 at a car boot with an alpine amp (unfortunately i lost the lead for)!

Its hard on a budget as you run a high risk of wasting your money. Keep this in mind:

Buy something cheap and you buy it more than twice

Meaning: You buy the cheap thing then when it fails you, you then have to buy the right thing you should have bought in the first place. Plus you have to fix any damage it did and spend more of your time installing/un-installing.

99% of the time yes, there have been a couple of sets that have come out that are good but most a not.
Why is this/Why do you hate them so?
  • Well for a start they are a compromise. Any Driver you ask to do EVERYTHING is going to struggle somewhere.
  • They are mostly cheap = low quality
  • They are the main stay of the chav. Every Saxo in the world have to have a set, as did every car every featured in MaxPower... its the law i looked it up ;)
  • They sound sh!t, see point 1
As i said there is exception to the rule infinity and Hertz make some nice ones but they are some much money you might as well buy a good component set!

Is there anything else you could reccomend for under rear seats?

No its a silly place to put speakers, unless they are Subs... sorry

Yes the Boston Rally sub are quite good, And what is the lead your missing? Most amps dont need anything special might be a quick fix...

Looks like back to the drawing board for the placement.

The lead for the amp, there is a block connector for speaker output which I've lost unfortunately. The amp I doubt is that good anyway, it's an alpine mrp-t306 'flex 2'

Tried to find the cable online but no joy! Any ideas?

Yes first get a close infocus pic of the input port.
and details of anything relevant thats printed on the amp re the plug..

[Edit] Dont worry did my own R&D.

OK its a good little amp, in fact just what you need for your front speakers... which you will buy once you have taken the sony x-poo speakers back (hint hint).

Right the plug is Not available from alpine any more, but its not really a problem with a little work you can simple go around the plug or get a similar plug and wire it as needed.

Now it looks like a standard Apline plug they use in there head units. so a trip to halfords (the same one when you take the sonys back ;) )and ask them/ look for a Alpine to ISO adapter.

The pinouts are on this PDF.

http://autosound21.c...pec-install.pdf

You simply cut and solder as needed..

Bingo! Amp for the use of...

Wow, genius, you're very good at answering questions!!

Couldn't find the lead on the Internet, should I attempt doing it without ? I'm thinking it'll be too fiddly.

Just out of interest, how is it you work out that an amp is ok for a sub or certain speakers?

As it says sometimes for example, 30w 2 channels at 4 ohms or 80w bridged at 2 ohms or something like that, is it east to work out? Am not sure what bridged means, but I gather its if you have a sub you bridge the connections somehow to give it al, the power?

Would rather learn than have to ask questions every time you see!

Thanks again for all the help, am very appreciative!

Edit: just to add, 6x9s going back tomorrow. Going to buy some front speaker pods I'm thinking. Do you know of some options ? Have seen the ones by the guy called rogers (I think) on here, was just thinking if there's any others? Thinking 6.5 inch speakers.

for speaker pods i'd recommend these: http://www.optimise-...er_Pods_Spacers I have a set in my mini and as you can see from the photos on the link they can be mounted in the front by bolting them to the lower dash rail.
