
Strange Knocking Possibly Cam Follower

If it is a simplex chain (one row) then check for slack, if there is slack then the chain will tap and slap about. To rectify this purchase a tensioner and adjust to take up slack...or just by a duplex chain kit!
Also are you sure the knock isn't the fan catching on the cowling.

How much did you have the head skimmed / block decked during the rebuild?

Are you sure you have clearance between your valves and pistons as you are using hi lift rockers?
How much did you have the head skimmed / block decked during the rebuild?
I assure you that is not the problem, the slightest connection between piston and valve would render the engine usless. To me it sounds cam related, if you put pressure on each rocker in turn ( a mallet or lump of wood) with it running see if the sound changes in any way, it might help you isolate the source.

I assure you that is not the problem, the slightest connection between piston and valve would render the engine usless.
I ran my pug 106 diesel for 20 miles to work and back with the valves hitting the pistons after doing a cam belt change.
Luckily it had vernier gear on camshaft and I was able to retard the cam a bit to stop it.
