The auto A series engine block is different to the manual so will it not fit the gearbox without alot of extra work.
Due to the number of failing auto Mini's in Japan it was reported in one of the Mini magazines that they have started to produce the parts to convert auto engines more easily to manual gearbox but not yet worth it in UK where parts are cheaper and more plentiful.

Why not just buy a 1275 manual?

It is absolutely NOT a practical proposition........but yes it 'can' be done. But since there are loads of manual 1275 blocks around - it's just not going to be worth it for a long long time.
