put the reg on retention or transfer it to another car then you should not 100% get it back

Depending on what has happened to your original plate you may not get it back. For example it may have been transferred to another vehicle either before or at the same time as the private plate was put on. If this is the case you will get a new age-related plate.

Is there any reason you want the original back. Ive always believed you get a random plate for the correct year.

I agree, I think you get given a non-transferable age related reg rather than the original in most circumstances.

I put my reg on last september, took it off about a month ago to put on retention and got the original one back on it

when we sold Mrs B's daily we transferred her private plate to her new car
the old car went back to it's original plate
it's what the DVLA prefer to do as long as the plate is still free and in there system

well for the plate i have on the car a company has offered me £400.. thats £400 toward my engine build in my eyes. money well spent. looked at the dvla website and i dont quite understand this rentetion stuff. why do i need to pay up to £155 for 3 years???
all i want to do is sell my current plate and get my old one without too much fuss and expense

I've swapped my plate 4 times onto various cars and always got the original one back

Yeah i recently took my private plate off my old Mini 30, its been on it for 10 years.
I got the original G reg plate back.
I think its the norm now.

Fair enough then!
You have to pay to keep the number on retention because if you don't it will go back into the pool and either get deleted or reissued. Remember you don't actually own a registration, you merely have the right to use it. It's only a reference number not a physical item or even intellectual property. Registrations are meant for use on vehicles so if you want to reserve it but not use it on a car you have to pay, it remains the property of DVLA at all times though because it's a reference from their system.
