*Edit* nor is roof racks, rubbish on roof racks, rusty bikes or cuddly toys hanging from things.
Naturally occurring moss, green, dents, rusty patches (not entire panels) and the accompanied runs is how it's supposed to be, the first picture is rat perfection. Good things come to those that wait and all that.
And that odd, chopped, matt black coupe thing isn't rat either, but it is pure awesome.

Rat look was good when it was new... but It's been done to death. I've been on the rat look forum for years and was REALLY into the scene a few years ago... now I just think it's rediculous.
So many people have no idea what ratting is and make pathetic efforts. Rubbing back solid panels and priming them, drawing crap on them and painting bits of your car in different colours... it just looks rubbish.
On a Hot-rod it's fine. The whole thing originated officially from people with Hot-rods that would spend so much on actually BUILDING the hot rod and engine etc, that paint and a pretty finish in hot-rod tradition wasn't financially possible... hence the 'ratrod' was created... these people built their cars... they didnt just rub them down in an effort to look different

The only decent rat look car pictured here is the very first one. You can't force the look of decay, age and unloved disrepair. Stripped and salt-watered bonnets looked bad the first day Mr VW Golf decided to do it, and it hasn't got any better, nor has sticker bombing, odd splashes of colour or scribbling rubbish all over your car. Or grass.

I forgot about this thread

Although I'm not doing it now my intention was to Mk1 it with a different bonnet, lights, grille, seats and some bumpers with over-riders, just to make it look old and un-loved, all second hand stuff I have kicking about. Oh, and roof bars with the surfboard on when I go surfing. Only subtle things, non of this pointless crap on roof racks, lol.
Still, each to their own

I think empty roof racks look ok, and roof racks actually being used. The rally cars with the spare wheels in the roof racks look awesome. I intend to get both a roof rack and bars, so I can swap them over depending on whether I want to take my bike somewhere etc.

Basically I really don't understand people making their car tatty and look tatty, just to have the 'look'. Especially when it doesn't actually have the 'look' because it's so obviously faked and over cliched, it looks god awful! Prime example is stripped bonnets, and it isn't proper rat-look, it should be called rat-scene or something equally crap. Genuine patina looks good however, because it's obviously genuine, although I would still choose the shiny well looked after look over it every day.

I'm afraid I disagree
Rat look was good when it was new...
Genuine rat = "patina"
A good rat-rod = cool (if not OTT)
Rusty bonnet = idiot
The rusty bonnet is stupid! There is a bloke near my work with a corsa and he's got the same. He doesn't look cool he looks scruffy! Haha.

My "Matt Black Couple thing" was never really intended to be a "Rat Look" ,
jus that it`s ended up that way because i like the way it`s ended up

& with Bmw Twin cam Turbo Injected power ,,,wellll.... why wouldn`t it be "Pure Awesome"?
