Hi All.
Just to say thanks to all that suggested solutions.
I took the engine out and dismantled and as I had thought, I had fitted the 'O' ring between the engine and gearbox. The oil pump bolts were also tight but I did find that the three bolt lock tab washer was being held off slightly by the body of the aftermarket oil pump. I corrected this with washers below the lock tab washer.
However, I think that the real problem with the low oil pressure was the gasket between the pump and block. I had followed Keith Calver's article in Mini Magazine recently, in which he modifies the oilways and gasket. The problem which I discovered was that the holes in my oil pump were slightly different to those in the block, meaning that the gasket had rotated, effectively partially blocking the main feed holes. The new pump came from Min-its at Bimingham (NOT THAT I AM HOLDING THEM RESPONSIBLE AT ALL - THANKS GUYS FOR GREAT SERVICE!!).
I put the engine back together again with new gaskets and hey presto, 50-60 psi at idle and 70-80 when revved. Happiness restored!
i thought that I'd post this as a follow up as it had be baffled!
