If you change the oxygen (lambda) sensor please replace with a bosche one (i have made the mistake of using another type and had problems) also you will need a 22mm special socket to remove the sensor (unless u want a lot of heartache) so i would definately get this before attempting the change, and apply liberal amounts of anti sieze to the new one.

A diagnostic session would probably be the best way to find out exactly what needs doing. Does anyone know anywhere around Bristol that may do this?

What can they test and how much is this kind of work normally?

a diag session usually consists of plugging the kit into the diag ports and testing the senders and actuators, etc.

sure you local rover (whoever has taken them over) can do it and the costs start from around £50 up.. + parts. The main dealers often have access to more proprietry test gear that the average joe can get/afford.

I myself have and use the SP ACR kit and its not half bad but can leave you struggling. imperitive you check all the obvious things first as it can often be something simple (my vauxhall was playing up and depite all the errors that were being logged it turned out tp be dodgy connections into the ecu!!! grrr..)

the SPi isnt that complicated by todays standards so any fault should be easily spotted.

Dave

This is what I got and does a fair job and for 25 notes is half the price of what the suggested Diagnostics session would be. Keep your eye on it because I know this has been relisted so obviously did not sell so should be a good price at end of auction

Will keep a look out on that ebay listing, I am sure I have seen those recommended before.

You say it is important to use NGK BPR6ES plugs, I think I have just put BPR6E plugs in, how likely is that to cause any problems?

I just had a look at the SP ACR Kit on ebay, it's a little expensive for the home user but I would imagine good kit.

I think they just make the car run smoother, i changed to these plugs and there was a noticable difference :smartass:

No harm in changing the plugs, it's only a few quid for a set and if it might help things then it has to be worth a try

The plugs you may have fitted and mostly what halfords sell are BP6ES.

Here is a link that tells you what the numbers and letters mean http://www.spark-plu...ical/ngkjpg.htm

So the BPR6ES is a 14mm thread with a 16mm hex, projected center electrode with resistor, heat rating of 6, 19mm thread reach and standard copper core center electrode

BPR6EV is the same as above but with a V groove center electrode.

The BP6ES is the same but without resistor.

The resistor is just for electrical noise surpression to stop electrical interference with the ECU http://www.ngkntk.co...sistorplugs.asp

I bout some Bosch plugs with four ground electrodes, they were all i could get at the time. They were non resistor. The engine did not like them, and niether did next doors tv, and yes they commented :nugget:

The ones I have are the V Groove ones, they have always worked OK in carb minis I have owned. If the SPI prefers the solid copper core then I will get hold of some of those

I've heard bad things about the bosch spark plugs with the 4 electrodes. Even with 4 electrodes there is only one spark and the other electrodes just get in the way of the air/fuel mixture getting to the spark.
