sure you local rover (whoever has taken them over) can do it and the costs start from around £50 up.. + parts. The main dealers often have access to more proprietry test gear that the average joe can get/afford.
I myself have and use the SP ACR kit and its not half bad but can leave you struggling. imperitive you check all the obvious things first as it can often be something simple (my vauxhall was playing up and depite all the errors that were being logged it turned out tp be dodgy connections into the ecu!!! grrr..)
the SPi isnt that complicated by todays standards so any fault should be easily spotted.

You say it is important to use NGK BPR6ES plugs, I think I have just put BPR6E plugs in, how likely is that to cause any problems?
I just had a look at the SP ACR Kit on ebay, it's a little expensive for the home user but I would imagine good kit.

The plugs you may have fitted and mostly what halfords sell are BP6ES.Will keep a look out on that ebay listing, I am sure I have seen those recommended before.

Here is a link that tells you what the numbers and letters mean http://www.spark-plu...ical/ngkjpg.htm
So the BPR6ES is a 14mm thread with a 16mm hex, projected center electrode with resistor, heat rating of 6, 19mm thread reach and standard copper core center electrode
BPR6EV is the same as above but with a V groove center electrode.
The BP6ES is the same but without resistor.
The resistor is just for electrical noise surpression to stop electrical interference with the ECU http://www.ngkntk.co...sistorplugs.asp
I bout some Bosch plugs with four ground electrodes, they were all i could get at the time. They were non resistor. The engine did not like them, and niether did next doors tv, and yes they commented :nugget:
