I'd say go with a hot hatch of some sort.

Mini is good fun, but as mini93 says, you'll be moving over alot to let people past.

MK2 golf gti, mx5, 205 gti, 106 gti, clio 172, mk1 clio 16v, saxo vts/vtr, these cars are fairly cheap. And it will be a case of jump in turn key, thrash round and drive home.

This is from experience of participating in a few trackdays, and being a passenger in dozens. These people seem to have the most fun.

I think its only my heart saying mini, in all honesty it will never be able to keep up with a modern car. Realistically i need to be looking at getting the most modern low milage biggest engined hatchback i can as it will be safer, have that much more development gone into its design and from the off its safer and going to give better performance. Just gonna keep an eye out locally, see what turns up :P

What about a Corrado VR6? Can pick some up fairly cheap now, and chuck a cage in it?

Use websites like race cars direct and motorsport ads to find race cars which are for sale, you will get loads of mx5's and saxo's which are being raced come up for sale. Although they may not look the nicest (they will have had a few knocks) they will be cheap and track ready (including a cage etc).

With the engine and transmission costs and all the other preparation parts required a Mini is not really as low cost as you might imagine. With their increasing classic status they will become more expensive. Unless you are a 'Mini-nut', like most of us on here, in all honesty you will probably be better off with a more modern car. For example a Toyoya or a VW Golf come to mind.
