Just to confirm, if your car has not been taxed since before 1st January 2008, you do not need to declare SORN.
Once you tax it, you then become liable to SORN if you leave it un-taxed.

Another point to make for those of us with Historic class cars (free tax disk), if the car is taxed, it needs to be insured even thought the disk is free.

I hadn't SORN'd a car for several year, and in that time I'd moved 3 or 4 times. They finally caught up with me with a fine of £80. I took it on the chin and paid it, why argue if you are in the wrong. If the DVLA are in the wrong, of course you don't pay.

But in this case I think it's unlikely that you'll get away with it, whether it's agenuine mistake or not.

If they fine me £80 then to be honest I will be fine with it, as it was my mistake, I just don't want £1000 and a CCJ! Sounds like you were in a similar situation though so hopefully will be the same.

If you want it over and done with as you sound like you are worrying about it then just cough up the £80. The £1000 and CCJ's is just a scare tactic from the DVLA to get you to cough up.

That must apply to me, still get the letter though.

Takes no time to do however. Two minute jobby on the internet, paper work in the post.

I got a £40 fine for not declaring sorn on time even though I had attempted to sorn my mini multiple times by phone and internet... I thought about appealing as I had saved the error messages shown on the website, but after speaking to three different people from the dvla I realised that the dvla could never be wrong so gave in and just paid the fine.

Funnily enough after posting the first sorn declaration form (came with the fine) I phoned them up again as my mini was still been shown to be unlicensed, there response was that it probably got lost in the post and I needed to send another. So I sent another form by recorded delivery and soon after my mini was finally sorned!

The only time where I got good customer service from them was when I was handing over my hard earned cash!

Rant over...

I'm currently having trouble with Paddy and re sorning him. We had the reminder sent through the post so my other half went on the internet and did the business. Happy days so you would think but no, about ten days later another reminder turned up so wife went back on the net to check what was happening and found no information about the sorn at all ???

Being a clever type she had already printed of the confirmation that the transaction had taken place etc etc but today a third reminder has appeared   so go figure. We will have another look tonight to see what the Welsh Druids are up to and if no joy i will spend most of my day tomorrow ringing them up to find out what the hell is going on.
