The title says it all. I'm soon to do a rebuild and it would be good to know where and where not to use the stuff...

Never use any sealant on the head gasket.

I've always used Welseal on headgaskets.

In the days before I had a Mini I routinely used sealer on head gaskets. A company over here sells a product called K-W Coppercoat. It is a thin sealant spray containing powdered copper. You were supposed to just put a flash coating on the gasket to help it seal to the block and head.

On the Mini and my other British cars I've always put head gaskets on dry. This is particularly true for the black Payen gaskets which have a sealer already on their surface.

The black Payen gasket is part number BK450 and is an excellent head gasket with good sealing characteristics.

Okay, MRA - I've pinched some pics off your site (excellent value gasket sets by the way). If you object I can delete from my post. My challenge is to:

1) Name that gasket
2) Say if hylomar can be used

So

Gasket 12, Hiff 34/44 carb elbow gasket, Hylomar = Yes, especially when using a K&N cone filter as the plate never seems to sit flat!
Gasket 13, Heater valve union, Hylomar = Yes
Gasket 14, Themostat housing to cylinder head / later type pancake fitting for bypassless heads, Hylomar = Yes
Gasket 15, Exhaust, Hylomar = No (it can be but it makes a right mess when you fit it)
etc

Are there anymore gaskets?

Charlie

Blue Hylomar is not any good if petrol is in the same area....

(The specifications for Blue Hylomar have been added below and apparently it can be used for sealing gaskets where petrol is involved)

You can always add the links to our gasket sets as well :) .....

Martin,

According to the pdf sheet at

http://www.hylomar.c...3&Itemid=75

It's fine with petrol and specifically says it can be used on fuel inlets....My udersntading is that it can not stay submerged in fuel....

Well I'll add another

Gasket 11 - Hiff 44 carb -> carb spacer -> abutment plate -> inlet manifold, Hylomar = Yes (but I wouldn't bother)

Timing gear case!!
at the bottom of it where oil pools, always worth a dollop, as it always seems to leak.
Also a manual I have recommends a generous smear around the half moon seal.

Is the timing case number 9 and the half moon the rubber half moon one I have not numbered? I assumed a rubber seal would not need hylomar...

Anyone man enough to name a gasket and tell me if Hylomar is sensible. I am being entirely selfish as I have an engine to rebuild and it would be great to know......
