It is wrong according to 'Construction & Use' - but the MOT man won't know /care about that - he just wants to see a red light - and I don't swallow that story about it being brighter than a brake light etc. I did a similar conversion years ago on my TR7 (and I have done it on a Mini in the past) and never had the slightest comment at MOT. There is NO compulsion to switch the thing on in 'fog' - the ONLY time mine is ever switched on is at MOT time ! It does however need to be properly 'red' - not pink - so make sure that red bulb really does show up as red - you may need to put a piece of red plastic inside the white reverse light lens.

Why not just replace the old "half brick" sized for a nice classic chrome one instead.

Looks great!

Earlier in the thread it was mentioned that people were driving around with only one reverse light, and legality was questioned indirectly so I thought it was relevant. So really, it is only puzzling if you had not read the whole thread.....

There's a typo in that MoT manual C 'n D say the same, I guess it's meant to say it can't affect or be affected by another lamp. Either way you could argue that would cover being too close to a brake light & making it harder to see when you brake. Just like all those modern cars with indicators in the headlights

This details everything about the requirements for a rear fog lamp on a MOT test and doesn't mention anything about distance.http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_130.htm

It's not the MOT that's the issue.  The MOT doesn't test the 'design' of the car as such, just whether stuff is working.

This is one of those things that's not technically legal, but people get away with it.  There are countless examples on modified cars of things that people get away with on a regular basis.  Loads of Mini owners have done this mod and will continue doing so.  But, it's not legal from a construction and use point of view.  Whether there's any chance of getting pulled up for it is the risk you're taking.  But from a legal standpoint, nope, if it's not far enough away from the brake light then it's not legal.

And just because someone hasn't been done (yet) doesn't make it legal.

+1 for Guess Works' post. The regs clearly mean that converting a reversing light to a fog wwould be illegal. A lot of people seem to think 'If the car passes the MOT it must be legal', however not everything is tested on an MOT (otherwise it would be akin to an IVA test!), so when there is a C&U query it is always worth checking the relevant price of legislation which 9 times out of 10 will give you the answer in black and white.
