What power setting and wire speed setting are you using??
I use this setting for seam and tack welding. Wire speed 7, setting 2 and min power setting. When i plug weld i use 2 and max settings with wire speed at 9. This is on a Clarke 135TE Turbo Mig.

Try having a read through the How to Mig Weld tutorial on the mig-welding forum, check out the videos as well they are quite good. I payed about £30 for an auto darkening mask & it works fine. Are you sure the battery in it is good & does it need to be turned on inside before you start using it? Mine has a little button inside you press before starting to use it to turn on, it automatically times out after you've finished using it.

hi everybody thanks for all the advice, i have gone back to the old mask as i could not get my new auto darkening mask to the right setting. i either could not see what i was welding or the arc was too bright! i can see great with the old mask but you have to keep lifting the mask to see to start not a big problem. Also i have turned down the wire speed and the welds are not tall and thin now! I feel that everything has clicked into place now i seem to have found the correct settings, got loads done very happy will add some pics to my restoration page soon cheers guys!

I find extra light on the work area is a big help and the best thing I've come across for the job is a cheapy LED work-lamp from Aldi (or maybe Lidl or Netto). It looks like the halogen ones you can get on a small tubular stand but instead of a halogen light it's an array of LED's. The big advantage is that the light is very directional so if you point it at the area you are welding it doesn't trigger my mask.
