hello all,

as some of you may be aware, I've been searching out a way to prove that I have a particular mini (information gained from the engine number via british heritage, to get the VIN ect.) and now need/want to get the original V5.

Well I have found a possible avenue for success, through the DVLA.

There has been a recently formed team to help those such as me, the VC15 team.

You need a V62 form (Application for a Registration Document). Leave the reg no out and write unknown next to the box. Fill in the form and with a cheque for £25 send to Attn: VC15 Team DVLA Swansea SA99 1ZZ. Not the address on the form.

I've filled out the form, and tried to evidence my car as much as possible, with items like the british heritage certificate, and photos showing the cars features that will hopefully prove that the car is the original and that I'm not trying to con them or something. It was only posted today, so will report back when I've heard something.

My guess is that you car has been either been "reshelled", and the identity has been put on another car, or it has been scrapped.

Please keep us informed of any progress though as I am sure there are many others who would like to know the out come.

The stolen identity would be my worst fear (however that doesn't rule out an age related plate), however the car is original, and is in a very bad state. Would any body know if the identity had been stolen what would happen the car with the 'fake id'?

When I mentioned "reshell", I was not implying that you cars id had been stolen. A lot of Minis have been made tax exempt recently by applying the identity of an older Mini onto a newer one. This is what may have happended to yours. It would be upto both parties to prove the legitamacy of their car.

Man, this is a can of worms!!!

Technically, if you have the shell of the car then you have the ID, if the new owner has has re-shelled into a new shell then that could be a battle to prove who owns what.

If you've got a complete car then you have a strong case.

If there's some bloke driving around in a car that he bought off ebay then he could be about to lose it.

When was yours last on the road?

If I get the reg then I would be able to search when it was last MOT'd, but without that then I would be guessing 10 years ago at least.

Lets hope it, because if the reg is currently taxed and mot'd then the problems start!!!

Mind you I take comfort in a few things - if someone was to steal the identity and scrap the shell then why is there an original morris steering wheel and gear knob, and all the interior still there. All the car is missing is the boot, all the glass and front end. It looks like it was sanded down for restoration and then just left to rot.
