Or somebody gaining from free tax, how easy is it to see a car abandoned then take the reg and apply for a log book, if this is the case I hope thier car gets destroyed

I spoke to the DVLA and asked that as a hypothetical question, that being if the id was taken to another car, the answer was something along the lines of that as the DVLA have approved that car it will keep its reg and alike. Which I suppose is fair enough.

A lot of Minis have been made tax exempt recently by applying the identity of an older Mini onto a newer one. This is what may have happended to yours. It would be upto both parties to prove the legitamacy of their car.

I've heard of a couple of cases of this happening recently, both with Minis and Land Rovers. A car has had it's V5 illegally transferred to a newer car to make it tax exempt. Then eventually someone buys the old shell, manages to find a VIN number on it and applies for the V5. The DLVA then realise there is already a car running around with this id. So it inspects both cars to see which one the id really belongs to. Needless to say the shell with the correct VIN numbers tends to win, and the other cars is taken off the road and crushed.

well after many long chats and correspondance with the dvla I will not be getting anywhere with the V5. It went in for a check last june and so long as they cannot find any numbers on the body they will not issue a V5. Therefore if I were to proceed I would have to go through getting the vehicle a new chassis number, having IVA tests ect, and then registering it as on a Q plate, and therefore paying tax and everything on it. Which I aint prepared to do. So I will sell up as I've found another mk1 project where everything is in order. Papers and chassis numbers ect. I'll be honest with you I was half tempted to finish up restoring it and then getting a V5 off another vehicle and 'reshelling' it, but that aint my style.
So if you want anything let me know.

Thanks for updating us with your situation And I hope you don't loose out financially when you sell the shell on.
