It could be caused by the dip stick fairies, although I think its more likely to be the rings or a head gasket fault.

Could it be the oil pressure relief valve

Excess crankcase pressure, normally caused by worn piston rings, nothing to do with oil pressure. Check the engines breathers are clear.

Er not a chance, the oil pressure in the "pressure" side has nothing to do with the blow by caused by crankcase pressure.

This could be a case of a (really) loose fitting dipstick. robbie - when the dipstick is inserted and removed, is there any resistance at all? If no resistance is felt, then any bump in the road could make the stick jump out the hole...

Replace the rubber o-ring on the stick (should piggle out with a screwdriver, then take that to a motor factors as a "pattern") OR the more expensive option: buy a new dipstick with the new o-ring already attached...

What O ring ?

Half way up the stick, where it gets wider to seat in the hole, on that bit there is a rubber o-ring seal that gets worn / compressed over time, and does not seal the stick in the block. I would suggest to test / replace a 20p part, before suggesting a re-ring / re bore.

I'm not familiar with my car's dipstick having an o-ring either. Is this strictly an A+ thing?

Hi dklawson, yes just checked my A and then the A+ engine - only the A+ has the o-ring, sorry for the confusion. The A+ stick is like this one; you can just see the greeve which holds the o-ring

I think that dipstick was only fitted to MPi's as my SPi doesn't have that type, mine is th eearlier type with the large moulded seal.
