You wont get a certificate any more, just a recipet. It will all be online -.-

The 2 year proposal is just ridicuouls
VOSA live off of a £2 royalty for bike MOT's and a £3.50 royalty for car MOT's
32 million MOT's each year thats not a bad budget but they run allt he equipment, backup etc

When they implement it there will be no cars going through the system for a year apart from ones coming off of SORN becuase new cars dont need MOT;s anyway.
This means VOSA will have no budget.
80% at least of all MOT stations will go bankrupt from no buisness because that is the bread and butter buisness.

Then the year after you wont have the capacity to test 32 million vehicles again...

This is without the fact that a problem will not be there when the test is issued. At the moment the car is failed a year later with the problem as it is unsafe.
Imagine the problem 2 years later?

Corrosion, Rust, bearings, etc 2 years is a long time.

Absolute madness from yet another EU directive by Mr Von Rompoys undemocratic parliament

i cant see 2 year MOTs coming in, just think how bad a car can get in a year then times that by two :/ a mini could rot to dust in two years lol. As i said before they have this rule in cyprus and there are death traps driving about all over the place, because of this they were thinking of moving to a yearly MOT, and Cyprus is one of the leanest places to drive in the EU.
i really can't see i country like Britain Passing a law that could/would make the roads more dangerous. If anything is going to happen i could see it going to a 6month MOT. More money for the MOTers, 'safer cars', and another thing to Tax for the Goverment. Its win win win for everyone apart from Drivers.

errr no, you do get a certificate. The certificate layout as been changed and to reduce costs to the MOT traders, all certs are now plain white A4 paper.

The old printers have been removed and updated with a new printer, to allow printing of the new certs.

The idea is to save the MOT trader and VOSA money, as they no longer need to buy/produce 4 different MOT papers. (blue copy for tester, red for fail, green for pass, yellow for advise)

The MOT data as been "online" so to speak since it went computerized, the actual need for a certificate isnt that great as you can now tax your car online etc. But you still need a mot cert for a police producer for example. I know the police have access to the mot system to check, but there will be instances were they wont or dont have time.

Sounds just like when you book a flight and have to print out all your own boarding passes etc, just think how much money they are saving

Then just for good luck, they slap on extra fuel surcharge!

I prefer the old certificates, as they look "official" and you know what it is. In a folder of insurance docs, agreed values and such, the new MOT certs dont stand out. Could be easily misplaced or overlooked. Also the new certs dont give you the little peel off sticker bit for your window......BUT WAIT......instead they will text remind you about your MOT for £3.50 (think thats right off the top of my head, its at a cost anyway!!!)

there is also talk that pre 1960 cars won't need a MOT

That will never happen.

MOT = TAX = money

Same reason why the two year MOT thing won't happen.

Yeah that would be crazy because pre 1960s having no MOT makes no sense the MOT is for safety pre 60s cars are even more likley to be unsafe than a more modern car. Although i suppose you could argue most people who have a pre 1960s car these days are going to be collectors or enthusiasts so in theory they are more likley to maintain there cars to a higher standard than your average car owner. But i don't think laws are past on 'theories' like that. are they?

A lot of these changes are to bring the UK in line with the rest of Europe.............more and more of these kind of changes are EU directives which must be implemented by ALL member countries in the march towards common standards and regulations.

That's sensible, if you want EU citizens to move about freely while maintaining the standards of member countries. It's no reason for us to relax ours though, if we take our cars abroad they will have had a test within the last 2 years, we are the only potential losers by accepting foreign cars on our roads that aren't tested as often.

What's the point in testing trailer electrics without the trailer
That cat rule is a puzzler too, it doesn't have to work but you have to have it???

Who'll be the first to produce a cat shaped link pipe do you think?

From Bungle's link Public Consultation - Pre-1960 Historic Vehicles MoT Exemption Review
1.7 Pre-1960 manufactured vehicles are largely well maintained by their owners. The initial MoT test failure rate for these vehicles in 2009 was less than 10%, whilst the initial MoT test failure rate for post-1960 manufactured vehicles was over 30%.

Not impressed with this. That pretty much determines the route of my restoration. I was considering going supercharged and getting rid of the ECU, injection, cat, everything. Tidying the engine was the main incentive but I guess it will all just have to go back in. Injection engines look too cluttered, but I really don't want to swap the car for an older one. >_<
