When I had a 998 Cooper as my everyday road car I had a roof rack and every time I fitted and used it with any sort of load my consumption would go down from about 38 mpg to about 25 mpg. It really was that bad. Even empty is was not good, but I could fit it or remove it in about 5 minutes and I fortunately didn't need it very often.
It was a very useful bit of kit though.

I bought mine on ebay at the weekend for £85. It needs a lick of paint, but that won't cost too much and I already have a spray gun and stuff - Does anybody know a paint code which is a close match to the monte carlo roof rack?i want a roof rack but they seem to sell on ebay for a pretty penny, cheapest i have seen go was £65 and it was in a sorry state, how much did you guys pic yours up from and where?

You could get something like this if you're not after a monte carlo rack. http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_1135wt_1163
Similar ones go cheap on ebay, I've seen not sell at £5 but looking at the dimensions, I would have guessed it would have been too big for a mini. If you do a search in ebay, do something like 'gutter classic roof rack -bar -bars'. This will exclude the items with bars as a tag, so that you aren't trawling through pages of roof bars

I haven't got anything on mine yet, I'm tempted to buy a stuffed toy and cable tie it to it, just so there's something on it. I like the idea of spade and other stuff for winter, that could be useful (hopefully not) but I'd be worried about somebody stealing it.

MPG is a big issue with me as i am rather poor but on the plus i can fit and remove it very quickly. problem is i keep thinkng theives could do the same :/
Yes, both the rack and, more especially anything on it, is very vulnerable.
But I guess you'll only be using it when the load won't fit inside the car or in the boot so you can load and unload it safely.
The biggest thing I ever transported on mine was a complete single bed! complete with frame, matress and head-board.
With the additional fuel consumption it certainly encourages you to take it off when it's not needed.

Rope

Big rusty spanners for the good looks or instead maybe a wheel brace in the middle of the wheel
