you can't beat an old leather suitcase for the roofrack, not really a rally look thing though

Spare petrol cans full of petrol - you'll need the petrol as the roof rack will knock your mpg right way down.
When I had a 998 Cooper as my everyday road car I had a roof rack and every time I fitted and used it with any sort of load my consumption would go down from about 38 mpg to about 25 mpg. It really was that bad. Even empty is was not good, but I could fit it or remove it in about 5 minutes and I fortunately didn't need it very often.
It was a very useful bit of kit though.

I bought mine on ebay at the weekend for £85. It needs a lick of paint, but that won't cost too much and I already have a spray gun and stuff - Does anybody know a paint code which is a close match to the monte carlo roof rack?

You could get something like this if you're not after a monte carlo rack. http://www.ebay.co.u...#ht_1135wt_1163
Similar ones go cheap on ebay, I've seen not sell at £5 but looking at the dimensions, I would have guessed it would have been too big for a mini. If you do a search in ebay, do something like 'gutter classic roof rack -bar -bars'. This will exclude the items with bars as a tag, so that you aren't trawling through pages of roof bars ;)

I haven't got anything on mine yet, I'm tempted to buy a stuffed toy and cable tie it to it, just so there's something on it. I like the idea of spade and other stuff for winter, that could be useful (hopefully not) but I'd be worried about somebody stealing it.

Yes, both the rack and, more especially anything on it, is very vulnerable.
But I guess you'll only be using it when the load won't fit inside the car or in the boot so you can load and unload it safely.
The biggest thing I ever transported on mine was a complete single bed! complete with frame, matress and head-board.
With the additional fuel consumption it certainly encourages you to take it off when it's not needed.

Cooperman that's well funny I'm well tempted to beat your single bed might have to try a kingsize one and I'm not planning on running around with the stuff on all the time might put them on for a how but put them in the car and put them on top at the show lol but my list is spare tyre a old esso tin fuel can and hmm maybe a old water Kerry can :s and a old looking shovel and some
Rope :) may be some
Big rusty spanners for the good looks or instead maybe a wheel brace in the middle of the wheel
