linky :)

sorry if this is a re-post but it could be a reasonable project for someone, might not look quite as bad if it was given a good clean up :)

That would need to be looked at very carefully to see if it's an S shell, it's missing various parts that would identify it as an S such as the boot board brackets (I can't see them in the photo) trims around the doors (doors could have been replaced) the right hand tank hole looks hand cut as well (probably only a single tank car converted, which would be possible with an early S) and it will be a lot of work to put it back together and cost ££££££ as the trim is gone and the engine / box

So what's it worth.
It will cost around £5000+ in parts and painting, then you need an 'S' engine at whatever that will cost, maybe £3500 with a gearbox. Labour will be about 400 hours.
After it's done worth around £20k upwards assuming it's done correctly. The 'S' shell is the same as any Mini of the same age except for a few minor details such as the boot board brackets, which are all available.
A nice project for womeone with the time and facilities. I have a '66 rally 'S' to start on shortly, otherwise I would probably bid around £2500 for it. Be nice to save an original 'S'.

i love the fact people are bidding to save abit of mini history like that. i wonder how many hidden treasures like that there are still around the country, in peoples gardens, barns, fields.
I wish i had the skills, time, money and know how to take on a progect like that, must be one of the most satisfying thing s to do. i hope somebody on hear wins it and keeps us posted.

I had to find a better shell for the 1071 I re-built into a rally car a few years ago. Then completely re-built that shell.
The 1071 really is a superb and rare car.
Love the look of your white car Mr. mk1leg. It just looks superb and white is such an unusual colour for that model and year.
A genuine 1275 'S' engine in a 1071 would devalue it a bit, but not by much as it's still a genuine 'S' with a period engine.

1071's are great cars, the first of the S range with the smoothest engine, and you are right Cooperman there are very few differences on the early S shells, With this car its missing so many of its original parts perhaps the shell is less important, changes of 'base unit' have been going on for years, especially with competion cars, (this one may have an interesting history once it's looked into) this car once it's done is going to be 95% replaced (perhaps 100% if the shell is changed), the problem usually doesn't start with the person who rebuilds the car, it's normally 2 or 3 people down the line when it suddenly becomes 'all original' and as it left the factory, someone pays big money for it and can be left dissapointed if the car isn't what it's sold as (I've seen this many times as you probably have too)

I do agree entirely with what you say. Maybe I take a slightly less 'absolute' view of what constitutes original than some people. That's because I was rallying Minis in the 60's and when they got badly bent we just used to get a good shell off a cheap 850 and re-build the Cooper or Cooper 'S' with all the rally bits into the replacement shell, still using the Cooper or 'S' reg.no. Everyone did this, including the BMC Competition Department, and it was not frowned upon.
There is a quite well-known Cooper 'S' in historic motor sport which started out as an 850, was prepared for rallying, subsequently got a 997 engine, box and brakes then, later a complete 1275 'S' set up. It's entered the RAC, Welsh and other internationals as an 'S' and complied with the homologation papers in all respects. To me it's a Cooper 'S'. A Cooper 'S' is, like any car, a sum of all its parts and if all the parts are identical to those specified on the homologation papers, then that's what it is.
I mean, if a restored Cooper 'S' built identically to how a Cooper 'S' was originally built can't be called a Cooper 'S', then a Mini with a different engine, like a Honda, is not a Mini at all.
Those are my personal views. The problem comes when someone claims, as you point out, that a car is something it's not, like completely original with all original parts, and then deem it worth a premium in terms of its sales price.

It'll be interesting to see what someone will pay for both items. My guess is a lot! :gimme:
