Engine arrived this morning:) Plan is to turn it into a fast road 998, then swap it with the 998 currently in my daily drive mini 30 :)

As most of you may have noticed its missing the flyweel and housing :( I may have missed this on the ebay add but oh well you live and learn. Doh! Plan to get a lightened flywheel so saves me buying a flywheel remover i suppose :D

Here it is.

Now just waiting for me to get a spanner big enough to remove the pulley bolt. Hopefully pick one up before work. Until then im stuck so will update more on sunday evening when i get some time off work.

If anyone spots any problems please do shout :)

Plan so far is 12g295 (arriving next week)
Lightened fly wheel.
Rebored slightly (need to check C Ratio e.t.c yet)
Kent 266 cam.
And thats it so far.
Still learning and reading as going along.

Ta Mike

Same! I'll watch this - just replacing my 998 for a fast road 1330 I'm currently building, but I might do something with the 998 once the other is completed.

Hi Bud nice one doing ok i see, pity about the pistons if they are ok flog them, as for your 266 cam Ask Cooperman or andy
save some money and get a MG metro cam they are the same i think, and there are some on ebay
you need a 33mm socket for the pully it needs to be torqued up quite tight spanner no good

With the flywheel already removed your going to have a bit of trouble removing the cam pulley bolt and sprocket nut regards locking the engine so it doesn't spin. Have you got a impact gun by any chance?

Yeah I found out about the sprocket after the post :) off to local tommorow to hunt one down. Cheers for the tip on cam will get researching :)

I never considered the locking problem though :/ I don't have a gun no :( would it be easier to get hold of a fkywgeel, reattach, take off pulley, then remove flywheel?

Yep...wont be easy to get that bolt off now! also the inside face of the transfer housing where the bearing has commited suicide looks worn. you may need to get it machined flat again and a new set of oversized washers to take up the idler gear end float...check the gearbox case behind the idler gear..If it looks like this...it will need a bit of work...this one did!!

In order to lock the engine, some people split the block from the gearbox and then use a block of wood jammed between the crank to stop it from rotating. If your carefull, and the block of wood is no where near the journals, you should be fine.

Find some flat steel to fit in the slot in the end of the crank shaft tyre lever ect, and get another body to hold it
when i took mine off it was not that tight it might just work, soak it in releasing fluid first and give it an initial whack
with a cold chistle first

I was thinking something like that but was very unsure. Would be easier and less risky than taking off gearbox and jamming crank I suppose...
