Has the timing slipped and what you describe is actually pinking? Have you examined the distributor since the initial event?

Ya i was thinking that but the noise from the top of the engine not the bottom and woundnt explain the loss of power if it was bottom end if i put my foot down it just won't pull

When a head gasket goes between cylinders it can give just that sort of noise as the "explosion" from one cylinder can "blow" across the broken gasket section and hit the top of the piston coming up the cylinder. Wouls aso account for the sudden loss of power/performance.
The sound given off by this happening sounds like severe pinking/detonation. If the noise is deffo coming from the top of the engine it could be piston problems.

However, by the same token, it could be big end problems although these tend to come on gradually with lowering oil pressure and a "harsh" feeling engine. As others have said, time to whip off the head and see whats going on.
Post up some piccies of what you find.
Cheers,
Steve.

Its time to stop running the engine anyway, if its a big end gone then it could easily throw a rod and destroy the engine and box.
Taking the head off is easy so start with that anyway

Between 2 and 3? That was not the noise i was expecting at all! In fact i know what that noise sounds like on a 998! I also know what it sounds like on a full race 1293. Not a nice noise at all!
