Changed the n/s wheel bearing a few days ago, not driven yet
If I try the 12 and 6 o’clock no play
9 and 3 o'clock there is but not as much as before
The track rod ends are new and I had an assistant hold the steering wheel
But it didn’t look like the rack was moving at all
Torqued every thing up as per Haynes Manual
And greased all the joints and plenty in the new bearings
Am now lost to as were this play is coming from
Any ideas?
Still play, but where?

If it was the rack would i only get play on one side?
As the o/s is nice and tight

Yes Dave's right, if it's the rack itself that's failed it can do so at one end only. I think I'm right in saying that steering rack trackrod balljoints (not the track rod end) can be re-built and re-shimmed.

some racks can be adjusted for the play in the baljoint inside the rack and some cant difficult job to do on the car anyway
