Hello folks, thought i would update a little with this, not too much to report, but just a little mention for my little engine.

It's still going! Ha! No, in all seriousness, it has been a bit of a bonkers car to drive since fitting the engine. Have tweaked little bits here and there trying to get the best out of it and getting it set up in prep for a rolling road. That should be done befo the summer is out...hopefully!

Currently have a hif44 on it, had a cone filter, but got bored of the noise so fitted a later style air box and k&n filter with holes drilled on the box. Quietened it down a lot, which was lovely.
Power really does come in relatively low down. It pulls fine low down and isn't too lumpy and pulls strongly all the way up to 6000. I have a couple of times taken it to 6500 and if it wasn't for the fear of the dreaded "1098 will eat itself" i do believe it would go higher, i just don't want to risk it (though i did enjoy the 6500 on the occassions i did!).
Fitted an oil pressure gauge, was expensive as i wanted a magnolia one! When hot it idles at 25, which is ok, a couple of times when i have thrashed it, it has dropped a little lower. Nod ideal, but then the bottom end wasn't rebuilt, so i can't complain too much. One revs are up to 2000, even when hot, the oil pressure goes up to 50, which i think is good. Obviously, it goes up some as you rev higher, but once hot, doesn't go much over 60 pounds.

So all in all, i feel i was quite lucky. Lucky that some excellent help on here stopped me stripping my engine (cheers roy!) and lucky that the engine has been suprisingly driveable. My dad loves it too.
An old friend of mine had a Golf gti mk2 16v. We have decided that the eagerness my car shows and it's desire to be "driven" reminds us very much of that crazy vw beast. Obviously not as quick, but the feel is the same.

Very much looking forward to the rolling road, especially after the encouraging results that oltonlad had from his rr session (very impressive by the way, car sounds great too!)
We shall see what will happen...
:-)

Well done keeping it in one piece.... Consider an oil cooler to help the pressure - but 60 psi is fine if it can hold up there even when 'stinking' hot.... And resist the temptation to rev the nuts off it - it WILL break. You can rev a 998 - but not a 1098..... Can't remember - do you have a crankshaft damper on it???

Hopefully will get it in for RR in August time, just got off honeymoon so am a bit skint/can't justify it at the mo.

I was thinking about a cooler, wasn't sure if it was overkill or not. But you may have persuaded me now!
It does have a crank damper yes, fortunately!
Just put in a hefty order (by my standards) with Minispares for some service bits. I am taking it on a trip to Colchester for a friends wedding in 2 weeks, so we shall see how it performs then, am having the suspension set up by a local mini man (Graham Masters, if anybody has heard of him) so it should be good for the long haul journey, again, by my standards!!

Just the tracking really, going to get him to check all the alignments though as I just want it to be done properly without the agro.
Plus I won't have the time now as I am back to work on Monday after my 2 weeks off for my wedding and honeymoon. It's a shame!!

Congrats on wedding! That's the end of you 'playing with cars' days............ Easy to make your own tracking gauge - dexion is ideal !

Ah, Dexion. I remember using that for tracking. Back in the 60's and 70's we used to make up our own tools for all sorts of things. I've still got my original flywheel puller somewhere made from a piece of 7/8" steel plate and some studs. And I used to fit cylinder heads without a torque wrench, even on rally Coopers. I've actually re-built an 850 engine without using a torque wrench on any of the nuts or bolts and it ran fine for 45000 miles!
Couldn't afford to pay to get anything done when I was an apprentice engineer, but de Havilland Aircraft had lots of bits of useful stuff lying around and a good machine shop and fitting shop ;D

No, we sold it, it being my wife's road car, and bought a Mk.1 997 Cooper with a new 1275 'S' engine fitted from a guy who had put his young lady 'in the club' and needed to sell his car quickly! That was back in 1969. Then my wife complained that it used too much petrol so I sold that and bought her a Hillman Minx! Now you know why we are no longer married  . I had a SAAB 96V4 at the time so I didn't care.
