After watching the weather reports reporting heavy snowfall over the next few days, I've finally decided to bite the bullet and buy some new winter tyres. I spoke to mini sport and they are out of the Yokohama made types and only have The cheaper Maxxis (£63) or more expensive Hancook type at £105 each.

I was thinking of getting the Hancook type but only for the front two wheels. Do you think this will be sufficient to keep me going through winter or should I change all 4 corners??

in my view, a lack of traction on the back can be just as dangerous as a lack on the front. you dont want the front stopping faster than the back, i can see many spins happening with none on the back.

What about black circle tyres, i saw some good ones on mini spares i think. I have been thinking about this to, are your geting spare rims for them? i was thinking f1 sytle change if the white stuff hits

Agreed, any M&S tyres whatever the make will be better than summer tyres on snow!

IMHO maxxis are better than the hankook, but it really depends on wheather conditions, if its really for snow, i would go for maxiss or, even better, for some mud/snow tyres.
I know its expensive, but safety wise they're well worth it.

Thanks for the help. I opted for getting 4 maxxis tyres and already feel the better handling. Glad I had them changed today too as the ball joints look like they're on the way out...

Thanks again. :-)

i have got a pair of 10" colway m&s to go on the front, that i will be fitting on a pair of wellars, will just thriw them on in my garage of it snows, im not too worried about the back end as i will be taking it steady.

i was hoping that having some knobblies ready would mean it wouldnt snow(typical), but tonight is the night it seems!

You don't have to be driving fast.

I spun my fiesta on a roundabout doing about 10-15 mph in the wet, the rear tyres were pretty poor, they still had probably 3.5mm tread left, but weren't terribly good tyres.

I'd possibly be tempted to say that on a mini, it might be better to have the best tyres on the back, as the front has the weight of the engine on it, whereas the back doesn't have much weight, and unless your driving at silly speeds, the front probably won't understeer as long as the tyres are not completely gone.

You definately don't want the better tyres on the rear as the Mini is basically an understeering car with any power on.
I hate say this, but if you haven't got good tyres all round, then leave the car at home. It's cheaper to buy tyres than have body repairs done, not to mention what might happen if you understeer or oversteer into a vehicle going the other way.

Surely changing the front only is better than sticking with the four he's already got?
