I'm 17 and insured with Footman James for about £750 :)
Thats with me as the main driver, and my dad (38) and girlfriend (18) both as named drivers :)

I've got a full bike and car licence, and a motorcycle, which dropped the price by a few hundred as it meant I wouldn't be always using the Mini.

That was TPFT with free breakdown cover (which I've had to use a few times! :D)

everyone seems to be stopping insuring 17year olds! struggling to find sensible prices for my son! triied all the usual!!! anyone had a good deal recently?. i'm with footman james and they are refusing point blank to touch a 17 year old.

Got my insurance through Go Compare.
Bradford and Bingley quoted me about £700 as a learner which goes upto about £2000 after i pass.

This was fully comp on a 1981 Mini City, with alloy wheels, spot lights and a sport steering wheel.

finally managed to get sorted with graham sykes, they quoted £1800 with 17 year old as named driver. I cancelled my transit insurance with 9 years no claims, used no claims on mini and got it for £650. re-insured transit with 0 no claims for £400.....Simples!

I don't know why they won't let you use no claims on different vehicles, it's not as if you forget how to drive when you own more than one car.

what annoys me is if you claim on one policy it affects all the others!

madness, can't believe this, I turned 17 on the 17th of november. I rang two companies 3 or 4 weeks before I was 17.
Rang adrian fluxx, they quoted me £1000000000000 pounds and wouldn't insure me until I'd paddes.

Rang footman James, they quoted me £1300, own policy, 3rd party fire and theft once I'd passed.

So nobody will insure me until I've passed. But I do live in a high risk postcode and my mini is very modified.

Been insured with Footman James since I passed at the beginning of the year on my 1993 Tahiti. With a few things declared such as my stereo, speakers, full Maniflow system, few other bits.... :P I'm paying £870 a year on my own policy TPFT with malicious damage cover, breakdown cover and some other stuff. Cars kept garaged overnight! Pretty happy with that! :D

1, they charge stupid money, but if you dont crash you get half back.
2, they charge like 600, but if you crash it doubles.

If a teen crashes at the cost of 600 quid they will be further out of pocket for the cost of a repair and chances are they wouldn't be able to insure the £3000 cost after having a crash on your record.
number 1 would be a great idea - hopefully a wise insurance company is reading this for their next promo? :D

Price of insurance for new guy drivers has been the same for a long time. 8 years ago I was a named driver on my mums policy driving her Toyota Yaris GS 998cc. Cost of me as a named driver to cover fully comp? £1800. Still. I am proof that you are more likely to have an accident when young. I reversed into another car in a car park. XD

So the 17 year old in now the named driver? Dangerous ground as if its his car, he does all the driving and it is clearly a young persons car you are breaking the law by doing whats known as fronting. Basically means in the event of a claim you are uninsured which isn't good!

Good luck! My area is very safe for car crime/crashes so we are very low risk. Postcode lottery really.....

cars in my name and i'll be using it as much if not more than my son. I kno young drivers are high risk but they are being priced off the road!

I wasn't suggesting to break the law. When I was insured on my mums car it was very much hers and I would use it to go to college once or twice a week. If it is purely his car then my only advice would be to add parents as a named driver... Helps to bring the premium down and its legit even if they only ever drive in it once. :)
