Hi all.

I am thinking of spraying my roof black (the car, not the house)

is it possible to get a glass like finish with hammerite and some flattening etc etc

Have any of you managed this type of finish with hammerite? If you have pics that would be good.

Thanks

At my old work we used to repaint safes with hammerite. If you can get it right, the depth of the paint can look amazing.
Takes a long time to go off hard tho if you get enough coats on.

i would say use proper paint, not hammerite.
a 2k paint that will flat and polish really nice, not very pricey and your get a better finish.

Just using hammerite on my subframe and the paint is good...the spray is shocking waste of money..better going for normal paint

Hammereite can react when over painted with standard auto paints, which could then give you problems in the future. So as others have said, standard auto paint would be better. If you're looking for a non spray option, then you can achieve some really good results with Rustoleum applied with a roller.

As said use another paint on the roof and Hammerite on the floor. If you try to paint over Hammerite it goes naff. I made that mistake myself and painted the roof sill with white hammerite thinking it would protect it but I really wish id just used standard paint If I want to change it now Im gonna have to painfully take it back to metal and spray it with standard car paint...

Hammerite by volume is more pricey than proper paint.....so why bother?

I remember a mini build thread on tmf where the owner painted his mini in a dark green dulux household paint! (maybe even with a roller too)
if I hadn't have seen the tin I wouldn't have believed it due to the look of the finish in the pictures (although it may be different in the flesh)
if that's possible then why not hammerite? lol

You can say that again, I had to colour sand and polish one mini that I'd been working on last summer that had just come back from a professional paint shop. Not because it was a perticualy bad job, just the shine wasn't as good as it could have been.

As for my roller job, the mini in question still isn't finished. It was supposed to have been moving to a new home with me, but that never paned out. I was then also distracted working on a few other minis and then my own daily with a subframe that was fine the previous year, but just crumbled to dust this year come mot time.

Also i've since noticed the odd little spot I'm not 100% happy with, so I do plan on reflatting and redoing a few panels soon. Not that it really needs it, as a quick wipe over to remove the dust and the paint is still as fresh as it first was in the picks.

Mine has been hand painted in some coach paint with a roller off the guy i bought it from.

The front end looks good especially with the chrome parts i've added but the rest of the bodywork especially the roof will need taking back and respraying as when it rains it goes white :S annd there are run marks especially around the window areas..such a shame as the front looks stunning :)

Its not just roller paint jobs that get the white water marks after its rained. i've personaly had it on the roof of an 87 and that was still wearing its original paint. You could try using a wax to help seal and protect the paintwork.
