The bit of hose that was coming off is only about 3 inches long, joining the metal fuel pipe up to the carb, to the fuel pump. I have jubilee clipped it for now, why arnet you supposed to use these clips? The hose is not cracked, just slipped off.
I know im technically driving an "unroadworthy" car that would fail an mot, but i was asking about the safety of this particular situation, as i dont believe the mot is nessesarily a good guide of roadworthyness sometimes! before driving this mini, i was driving my dads 205 which felt horrible and has lots of little problems, but still went through an mot, but i personally consider it more unsafe than this mini!
ahh! i hate my dads cars, he never gets them sorted out properly.
i hope mine is finished soon!

Couple of problems in my dads mini...

Jublies tighten at 1 point, and doesnt give a round shape when tightening.
A petrol pipe clips gives a round shape when tight. therefore no gaps can occur, air ingress or fuel leaks.

Partly because Jubilee clips aren't very good at holding onto small diameter hoses because of the size of the worm drive section and partly becasue they shred the outside of the hose and fuel hose isn't as strong and reinforced as coolant hose.
This car is extremely dangerous in this condition. Do you really think that if the arm does have a chance to go to full droop and the spring drops out the only thing that will ahppen is to stress the brake line? Firstly your rear subframe is likely to get harpooned by the trumpet falling out as it hits the floor, or the trumpet will interfere with the wheel on it's way out and throw you into a hedge or it will hit someone elses car. Even if nothing happens with the trumpet then when the car does land it's going all the way down to the road which will also throw you into a hedge. Or even if the spring doesn't come out (which is extremely unlikely unless you are jumping off of something anyway) then having one wheel acting without a damper when the rest of them are properly damped is going to make the car very unpredictable when driving which could put you directly into that same hedge. Also you don't know how far the corrosion has spread, what if your subframe starts to come away on that side as you drive along?
Or if you are so dim that you really don't see this as a problem or are callous enough to not care about your own safety or the safety of everyone else on the road then think about your licence. How many points do you think you'll get if you get caught driving this car? Read your insurance document. If your car isn't roadworthy then your insurance is invalid so not only do you get nicked for driving a death trap you get done for no insurance at the same time. If any copper sees the condition of this car with you driving it you are going to get very severely punished and you would thoroughly deserve it.

Well said, Dan. Couldn't have put it better myself !!!
If one shocker mount has rotted through, the other side is more than likely in the same condition. But, of course, you won't see this as it's behind the tank !!!!
The car is blatantly unsafe to drive. Get it fixed before you end up killing someone. >

Wo! guys please calm down here- i do understand i shouldnt drive the car in this condition, i hate driving unsafe cars which is why i stopped drivign my dads 205 which had dodgy brakes!
I have had this car 5 days, and it still has 6 months left on its mot. when i got it i assumed it would be fine to drive as it had just had a service (aparently!). I knew it had some rust, but it has more than i thought. The damper turret broke when i hit a pothole, and i have only recently discovered what has actually broken. I don't like driving it with a dodgy fuel hose, but when your on the motorway you don't have a lot of choice! i used a jubilee clip when i got home to try and stop it falling off again for the time being, i also did not know at the time that this was not a good idea for fuel hose - hence why i asked, were all here to learn/teach! Its got to be better than nothing though!
i understand the handling of the car is going to be altered by the damper, which is why ive only been making essential journeys, and driving very carefully. and ive only made two journeys knowing its in this condition! i now your still goign to say you shouldnt have made any at all, but i had to get home after i found out what the problem was, and then get back to uni.
i asked how dangerous it is to be driving like this to assess whether i could drive the car when nessesary (as in not for fun, when i really need to get somewhere i can't cycle too) until i can fix it, or if i would have to put it off the road for the time being. i see now i should stop driving it immediately, and i am glad you guys are so supportive of road safety ect because it is very important, and i can ensure you i am a sensible driver, but i was just trying to get help and advise, theres no need to totally flame me!

Oh, you want to be flamed. Well why didn't you just say so?
Sorry if I over reacted, it sounded like you were saying ' I know it's broken but I don't care what an MOT would say about it, I'm driving it anyway'. The fuel clamp isn't actually dangerous in the short term as long as it's well sealed and it's easy to sort out anyway. It's the welding that you really need to see to. You should probably drop the rear subframe, pull the tank and have a really good look at the back end of the car to assess how much needs doing.

thanks for the apology, the shell really has got worse since i last saw it, and it hada new rear sub frame and heel board welding done to get it through its last mot.
to do the shell it would be a baremetal rebuild, fornt end needs doing, sills will need doing this year or next, i thought the back end was relatively ok, but evidently not. I was just hoping to be able to drive it until its mot ran out!
It would be a good car to use to rebuild a project though, i want to find a van or pickup thats just a shell or rolling shell and use the mechanics off this.
it will be parked up again until my mini is finished, so i will have time to work on this one. Its just a shame i got less than a week of use from it.
